GP Practice Health Care Assistant

An exciting opportunity for an experienced and highlymotivated individual to join this NHS GP teaching practice in Hoyland,Barnsley.

Main duties of the job

To supportthe practice nursing team in the delivery of nursing services, working as partof the practice multidisciplinary team, delivering care within their scope ofpractice to the entitled patient population. The healthcare assistant will deliver and assist clinical staff in the provision oftreatment, preventative care, health promotion and patient education.

About us

We currently have a team of 9 GPs, 1 NP, 4 PNs, 2 HCAs and a Nurse Associate, as well as a clinical pharmacist with meds management team support, first contact physiotherapist, health & wellbeing coach and care co-ordinator.

We have a full complement of established administration staff providing help with workflow systems such as incoming clinical correspondence, lab results and prescription queries.

We are a long-established training practice working from purpose-built premises in Hoyland, Barnsley. Good transport links, 5 minutes from M1 Junction 36.

We are a training practice for registrars and undergraduate medical students from Sheffield medical school. The practice has a strong educational ethos.

Special clinical interests are encouraged and supported.

Good clinical support. Our clinicians meet daily to discuss difficult and complex cases.

We hold monthly practice meetings. All members of the practice team are invited to attend. Participation is encouraged.

Regular team leader meetings are held to review progress/achievement on all contractual obligations.

Continuously reviewing our practice systems and processes with an aim to improving patient experience whilst also considering the wellbeing of our workforce.

Job responsibilities

PrimaryResponsibilities

Thefollowing are the core responsibilities of the healthcare assistant. Theremay be on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will bedependant upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:

• Undertake new patient health checks
• Support the practice nurse with health promotionprogrammes
• Carry out baseline observations such as pulse oximitery,blood pressure, temperature, pulse rate, recording findings accurately
• Facilitate routine and 24-hour BP monitoring, advisingpatients accordingly
• Undertake wound care, dressings and other clinical tasks asrequired
• Support the practice nurse with the management of chronicdisease clinics
• Carry out BMI checks as directed
• Act as a chaperone as required
• When trained, undertake venepuncture
• When trained, undertake diabetic foot checks
• When trained, administer vaccinations such as flu,pneumonia
• When trained, carry out ear irrigation under thesupervison of the practice nurse
• Carry out ECGs as requested
• Ensure specimens are recorded and ready for onwardtransportation
• Provide support during minor operations as required
• Ensure all clinical rooms are adequately stocked andprepared for each session
• Ensure fridges are cleaned routinely in accordance withextant guidance
• Ensure clinical waste is removed from clinical areas andsharps bins replaced in accordance with the practice IPC policy
• Deliver opportunistic health promotion where appropriate

SecondaryResponsibilities

Inaddition to the primary responsibilities, the healthcare assistant may berequested to:

• Participate in practice audit as directed by the aduitlead
• Participate in local initiatives to enhance servicedelivery and patient care
• Support and participate in shared learning within thepractice
• Complete opening and closing procedures in accordancewith the duty rota

Person Specification

Experience

• Experience of working in a primary care environment
• Experience of working with the general public
• Experience of working in a healthcare setting

Qualifications

• Healthcare qualification (level 3 or 4) or working towards gaining equivalent level
• Ear syringing certification

Clinical Knowledge and Skills

• Wound Care / Removal of sutures & staples
• ECGs
• Venepuncture
• New patient medicals inc. Height, weight, BP, Pulse
• Chaperone procedure
• Ability to record accurate clinical notes
