Senior Member of Technical Staff: Web Backend & Platform in Cambridge

Senior Member of Technical Staff: Web Backend & Platform in Cambridge

Cambridge Full-Time On-site
Walden Robotics

Position Summary:

You will build the web applications through which people understand and operate our robots—the dashboards, monitoring tools, and customer-facing interfaces that turn a fleet of robots and a firehose of robot data into something people can see, trust, and act on. This is a fullstack role with a strong back-end center of gravity: you design data models and services that hold up under real fleet load, then ship the operator and customer interfaces those services power. You'll work close to the domain, shaping how fleet status, telemetry, and operational data are surfaced to both our customers and our own team, and you'll own features end-to-end from data model to pixels.

Core Responsibilities

  • Backend systems & APIs: Design and build the APIs and services behind fleet and operator products—auth, data models, query paths, and service boundaries you can defend under production load.
  • Data stores: Own relational and key-value storage choices for telemetry, events, and application state; reason clearly about consistency, indexing, caching, and failure modes.
  • Live & realtime data: Ingest and serve live telemetry and operational events; build realtime visualization and streaming paths (including video-related data where it shows up in the product) that stay reliable when the fleet is busy.
  • Web applications: Ship customer-facing and operational web apps—fleet monitoring, status/telemetry views, control and configuration UIs—on top of the systems you own.
  • Front-end delivery: Build clean, performant interfaces for data-dense operational UIs. Strong FE taste is welcome; AI-assisted UI work is fine when it doesn’t compromise the backend or product quality.
  • Cloud operations: Deploy and operate web-facing services in the cloud with attention to reliability, security, and scale.
  • Collaboration: Partner with fleet, robot software, and product stakeholders; translate messy robot/ops reality into contracts and UIs people can trust.
  • Quality & ownership: Write well-tested, maintainable software; take features from ambiguous requirements through design, implementation, and production.

Required Qualifications

  • Backend-heavy fullstack experience: Proven track record building and shipping production web systems end-to-end, with deep strength in backend services, APIs, and data modeling—not front-end-only or FE-dominant profiles.
  • API & data design at scale: Experience designing APIs and data stores (relational databases and key-value / cache layers) for deployments on the order of 100+ users or devices, with battle stories about trade-offs that mattered in production.
  • Systems fundamentals: Strong programming skills and the ability to reason about time/space complexity, I/O, memory, and networking when debugging and designing services (Python or similar is a fine medium).
  • Live / data-dense products: Experience with live telemetry, realtime visualization, streaming, or similarly data-dense operational UIs.
  • Cloud fluency: Working experience deploying and operating web applications on a major cloud provider.
  • Software craftsmanship: Well-tested, maintainable code and care for the end-user experience.
  • Ownership: Ability to take ambiguous product needs through design, implementation, and independent production ownership.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Robotics, IoT, fleet management, or other systems that surface real-world device data at fleet scale.
  • Video data processing or live video/data paths in operator or customer products.
  • Authentication, authorization, and multi-tenant / customer-facing security.
  • Exposure to data pipelines and analytics (warehouses, query layers, telemetry stores).
  • Comfort building or guiding UI with modern JS/TS frameworks when needed, including AI-assisted front-end workflows.
