A Wakefield Recreation Summer Counselor ensures the safety, well-being, and engagement of campers aged 3-5 (Kids Corner) or Grades K-6 (Club Rec) by leading recreational activities, managing group dynamics, and enforcing camp rules.
Status: 17.5 or 32.5 hours weekly, non-exempt
Schedule:
- Kids Corner hours are 8:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. from July 6 to August 8, Monday through Friday
- Club Rec hours are 8:45 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. from June 29 to August 8, Monday through Friday
Essential functions:
- Safety & Supervision: Maintain constant supervision of participants (sight/sound), enforce safety guidelines, perform headcounts, and handle emergency procedures.
- Activity Leadership: Plan, lead, and participate in recreational activities (games, arts & crafts, cooperative games, and special events).
- Camper Care: Support the physical, social, and emotional needs of participants including mediating disputes and assisting with dietary restrictions/allergies.
- Communication: Provide updates to parents and report to the Program Director regarding participant behavior, incidents, or injuries.
- Logistics & Cleanliness: Maintain a clean, organized, and safe environment; manage equipment and documentation (e.g., attendance, incident reports).
Qualifications:
- Previous experience working with children (e.g., child care, tutoring, coaching).
- Strong communication and leadership skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and be flexible.
Physical Demands:
- Ability to actively participate in physical activities.
