The Bermuda Zoological Society is seeking to contract a Communications Manager for the Bermuda Ocean Prosperity Programme (BOPP).

About BOPP

The Bermuda Ocean Prosperity Programme (BOPP) is a community-driven initiative working to foster the sustainable, profitable and enjoyable use of Bermuda's ocean resources.

Through science, local knowledge and stakeholder engagement, BOPP's Blue Prosperity Plan supports a thriving blue economy, sustainable fisheries and marine spatial planning, including the full protection of 20 per cent of Bermuda's waters.

BOPP is a partnership between the Government of Bermuda, the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences and the Waitt Institute.

Working closely with the Government of Bermuda and BOPP, the Communications Manager will lead strategic communications and public engagement efforts that support the successful delivery of the programme.

The Communications Manager will play a critical role in advancing BOPP's objectives by developing and implementing communications strategies, fostering strong relationships with government partners, stakeholders, and the public, and ensuring clear, consistent communication.

Qualified candidates should have project management, strategic communications, and stakeholder engagement skills.

The ideal applicant will thrive in a fast‑paced environment and be able to collaborate effectively with a wide variety of stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as BOPP’s lead communications representative by engaging directly with government and community members, attending in‑person meetings, and maintaining trusted relationships.
  • Design and implement a comprehensive communications strategy, in close coordination with the WI Communications Manager, supporting the adoption and implementation of the Blue Prosperity Plan and its supporting actions.
  • Utilize communications tools to amplify programme milestones and workstreams, including sustainable fisheries, marine spatial planning, and the blue economy.
  • Support BOPP's media presence through government partnership, strategic press relations, press release writing, and message development.
  • Create content including briefs, progress reports, and stakeholder presentations that effectively communicate BOPP.
  • Lead management of BOPP’s digital presence, including website content development, social media strategy and execution, and digital analytics.
  • Proactively identify and cultivate opportunities for meaningful engagement across government, NGOs, and community sectors.
  • Plan, coordinate, and promote BOPP events, including public forums, stakeholder meetings, and community engagement activities.
  • Execute deliverables in accordance with the established BOPP work plan, meeting all timelines and quality standards, while tracking progress.
  • Professional Qualifications
  • At least 5 years of communications experience with demonstrated expertise in strategic communications and campaign development experience
  • Excellent time and project management skills
  • Reliable, responsive, adaptable, and comfortable working across time zones
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in communications, graphic design, media, or environmental policy
  • Excellent writing skills as well as copywriting and editing; specific experience with science writing preferred
  • Understanding of ocean/environmental issues and solutions
  • Comfort/experience coordinating with governments and/or large‑scale processes
