About the Role

We are seeking a Psychiatric Registrar to join our Mental Health Service here at Hawke's Bay Fallen Soldiers Memorial Hospital from March/April or mid-year on 3 August. As a Psychiatric Registrar, you'll be working under the guidance and supervision of experienced Senior Medical Officers, managing a wide range of cases across our services. You will work with a diverse patient population, gaining experience in assessments, diagnosis, and the development of treatment and management plans in collaboration with patients and their whānau. While most registrars begin their training with a rotation in our inpatient unit, there is flexibility to explore other placements depending on your level of experience and service availability. These may include rotations in:

  • Community Mental Health and Addiction Services
  • Child, Adolescent and Family Service
  • Emergency Mental Health Service (EMHS)
  • Maternal Mental Health
  • Older Persons Mental Health Service
  • Adult Mental Health Services

Our department is fully accredited by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP), offering a supportive and structured training environment.

About the Team, Service & Location

The successful candidate would join a team of 9 Registrars, 2 House Officers, and 14 Senior Medical Officers, all working collaboratively with nurses, allied health professionals, cultural support staff and patient advocates across the service. The Mental Health and Addictions Service encompasses a comprehensive range of care settings:

  • A 23-bed inpatient unit
  • Emergency Mental Health Service
  • Home-Based Treatment Team
  • Community teams in Napier and Hastings
  • Specialist services in Child and Adolescent, Older Persons, Consultation-Liaison, Early Intervention, and Maternal Mental Health

Hawkes Bay Hospital is a 400-bed secondary level public hospital in Hastings, serving a population of over 180,000 people. We offer both acute and elective care across a wide range of medical and surgical specialties, including paediatrics, obstetrics & gynaecology, and more. Although we don't provide cardiothoracic and neurosurgery, we are supported by a strong regional ICU team, ensuring comprehensive care for a diverse patient population.

You're a Resident Medical Officer (RMO) PGY3 or above.
