As our Payroll Team Leader, you'll oversee the endâtoâend delivery of payroll services for Health NZ staff, ensuring every employee is paid accurately, on time, and in line with legislation, employment agreements, and organisational policy. You'll provide dayâtoâday leadership to the payroll team, supporting their development, setting goals, and promoting crossâskilling to strengthen capability across the service.
In this busy and rewarding role, you'll be the goâto expert for escalated payroll queries, work closely with system administrators to maintain accurate configuration and data, and continually review processes to drive efficiency and best practice. Your work will directly support a positive employee experience across the organisation by ensuring payroll processes are seamless, reliable, and customerâfocused.
Youâll be part of the Payroll team within Health New Zealand's corporate services, based at Hawkes Bay Fallen Soldiers Memorial Hospital. The team works collaboratively with HR, Recruitment, Finance, Clinical Managers, and external organisations such as ACC, Audit NZ, payroll vendors, and other district payroll services. This is a supportive, highâperforming environment where teamwork, accuracy, and excellent service are at the heart of what we do. Youâll help foster a culture that values continuous improvement, partnership, and delivering a consistently highâquality payroll experience for all kaimahi.

As a Payroll Team Leader, you will bring:
- A relevant finance, business, or payroll qualification
- Significant payroll and leadership experience (ideally 7-10 years) and experience working within large, complex organisations
- Strong understanding of payroll legislation, including the Holidays Act, PAYE, and multiâagreement environments
- Advanced problemâsolving skills and confidence handling escalated or complex queries
- Excellent communication and relationshipâbuilding skills
- Proficiency with payroll systems and Microsoft Office, particularly Excel
- A collaborative, positive, and solutionsâfocused leadership style
- Commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, equity, and culturally safe practice
