You will be part of a supportive, forward-thinking Professional Development Unit that values collaboration, innovation and professional growth.
Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is firmly grounded in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and is committed to building a health system that serves all New Zealanders.
About the Role
As a Nurse Educator within Mental Health and Addictions, you will play a key role in strengthening the capability and confidence of nurses, mental health assistants (MHAs) and health care assistants (HCAs) across the service - with a particular focus on the Mental Health Inpatient Unit. You will design, deliver and evaluate clinical education that supports safe, evidence-based practice and equips staff to respond effectively to individuals experiencing acute mental health events. Working as part of the Professional Development Unit, you will support onboarding, create tailored orientation plans, lead training initiatives, coach staff in complex clinical situations, and contribute to organisation-wide education programmes. You will be a visible leader in the clinical environment, role-modelling best practice, supporting service improvements and fostering a culture of learning, safety and wellbeing.
About the Team/Service/Location
This role sits within the Professional Development Unit (PDU), a collaborative education and workforce development team supporting staff across Hawkes Bay Hospital and the wider district. You will work closely with the Nurse Manager PDU, senior mental health nursing leaders, the Mental Health and Addictions Group, and interdisciplinary partners to ensure education is responsive, relevant and aligned with service needs. The Mental Health and Addictions service is committed to delivering high-quality, equitable and culturally responsive care for tangata whaiora and their whฤnau. The team values partnership, whanaungatanga, and continuous improvement - providing a supportive environment for educators to innovate and influence practice.
About You
You will be an experienced mental health nurse with a passion for education, coaching, and building workforce capability. You will have:
- Current registration with the Nursing Council of New Zealand and a current APC.
- A relevant postgraduate qualification (preferably a PG Diploma); or the willingness to complete required study within 12 months.
- At least five years of recent clinical experience in mental health and addictions.
- A PDRP portfolio at expert or designated senior nurse level.
- Strong communication, problem-solving and relationship-building skills.
- The ability to work collaboratively across teams and support staff in complex or high-pressure situations.
- Experience or confidence in adult teaching, group facilitation or educational programme delivery (desired).
You will be a role model for professionalism, cultural safety, evidence-based practice and continuous learning.
