About the Role

We are seeking an Anaesthetic Fellow in Perioperative Medicine to join our Anaesthetic department here at Hawke's Bay Fallen Soldiers Memorial Hospital. The training year commences on 1 February and mid-year starts 2 August 2027.

Our department is accredited for one year of ANZCA Provisional Fellowship training in Perioperative Medicine. The role is designed to provide the Fellow with the key skills required by a perioperative physician caring for high-risk surgical patients undergoing surgery. The focus of the fellowship is to foster experience in the preoperative assessment, optimisation of and shared‑decision making with high‑risk surgical patients, intraoperative care of complex patients, and the post‑operative review and management of surgical morbidities. There is also an opportunity to be involved in developing a range of perioperative initiatives and undertaking an essential role in Perioperative Medicine education to nursing and medical staff.

About the Team/Service/Location

Hawkes Bay Hospital is a 400-bed secondary level public hospital in Hastings, serving a population of over 180,000 people. We offer both acute and elective care across a wide range of medical and surgical specialties, including paediatrics, obstetrics & gynaecology, and more. Although we don't provide cardiothoracic and neurosurgery, we are supported by a strong regional ICU team, ensuring comprehensive care for a diverse patient population.

The successful candidate would join a team of 11 Registrars and around 30 Specialists to enhance the Anaesthetic department according to their training and experience and would also participate in the out-of‑hours service.

Our Anaesthetic department is equipped with eight operating theatres, including two dedicated acute facilities. We extend our services to various medical procedures, ensuring a comprehensive approach to patient care by providing services for radiology, interventional gastroenterology (ERCP, selected upper and lower GI scopes), interventional vascular procedures, as well as a lithotripsy bus, and ophthalmological and ENT and dental procedures at our neighbouring facility. We also provide an intrapartum epidural service for delivery suite which has around 2000 deliveries per annum, as well as a hospital wide acute pain service and anaesthetic pre‑admission clinic.

Our Anaesthetic department runs daily anaesthetic preassessment clinics, and a fortnightly shared‑decision making clinic in conjunction with Geriatrics for high‑risk surgical patients. Fellow will have the opportunity to attend CPET, colorectal MDT and various Medicine subspecialty clinics. There will be opportunities to develop technical skills such as bedside TTE, through supervised in‑house teaching. The Fellow will have 2 sessions of protected non‑clinical time per week, to allow them to work on research, audit and education projects.

The Fellowship will consist of:

• Regular sessions in anaesthetic preadmission clinic
• Regular sessions in high risk surgical shared‑decision making clinic
• Involvement in anaesthetic preoperative echo clinic and acute bedside echo scans
• Involvement in regional anaesthetic service
• Involvement in CPET clinics
• Involvement in structured MDT meetings
• Involvement in a variety of Medicine subspecialty clinics
• Working in elective, acute, and trauma lists, either as primary anaesthetist or as second anaesthetist paired up with a consultant. There will be a focus on elective high‑risk cases
• Participation of the bespoke Fellow after‑hours roster, with gradual increase of responsibility and independent practice. The roster will be tailored to support transitioning into consultant practice
• Attending ward rounds with the Ortho‑Geriatric and Surg‑Geriatric Teams reviewing high‑risk patients during their perioperative journey. Fellow will also have the opportunity to round with Geriatricians on the rehabilitation ward to follow up on long‑stay surgical patients
• Opportunity to undertake perioperative projects, such as audits, education and guidelines

About you

You are an anaesthetic trainee in their final year of training (ANZCA provisional fellowship year, or ST6-7 equivalent in the UK system), or in their first year following aware of FANZCA or post‑CCT Certificate of Completion of Training (UK system).
