A well established and forward thinking Gloucestershire law firm is seeking an exceptional Head of Company Commercial to lead and grow its ambitious and expanding Company Commercial department. This is a rare opportunity for an experienced corporate/commercial lawyer to step into a strategic leadership role within a respected, modern, and people centred practice. As a Board backed leader, you will shape departmental strategy, mentor future talent, expand the commercial client base, and ensure the delivery of high quality legal services. The Role

As Head of Department, you will play a pivotal role in the success, development, and visibility of the Company Commercial offering. Responsibilities include:

  • Departmental Leadership & Strategy
    • Setting and delivering the strategic vision for the Company Commercial department
    • Leading, motivating, and developing a team of solicitors, trainees, and support staff
    • Implementing robust workflows, quality standards, and compliance processes
    • Contributing to firm wide leadership as part of the Senior Management Team
  • Client Advisory & Complex Work
    • Managing a high quality caseload including M&A, shareholder agreements, commercial contracts, restructuring, joint ventures, and governance matters
    • Acting as a trusted advisor to SMEs, owner managed businesses, and high value commercial clients
    • Ensuring exceptional service delivery that reflects the firm’s reputation for clarity, approachability, and expertise
  • Business Development & Profile Building
    • Developing new client relationships and nurturing existing ones
    • Working closely with Marketing and BD to identify opportunities and represent the firm externally
    • Playing a central role in firm wide business development initiatives and strategic projects
  • People Development & Mentoring
    • Supervising junior lawyers and supporting their progression
    • Providing coaching, feedback, and structured development pathways
    • Building a collaborative, high performing departmental culture

The Ideal Candidate

We are looking for a senior legal professional who brings technical excellence, commercial acumen, and inspiring leadership. You will ideally have:

  • 8+ years PQE in corporate or commercial law
  • Experience managing complex transactions and advising high value clients
  • A proven track record in business development and client relationship management
  • Experience supervising or mentoring junior lawyers
  • Strong strategic thinking and operational leadership skills
  • An approachable, collaborative style aligned with a people first culture
  • Ambition, confidence, and the desire to make a significant impact at leadership level
