We have an exciting opportunity for a Finance Assistant to join our expanding team. The Finance Assistant will support the finance department by managing daily accounting tasks and ensuring accurate and timely processing of financial transactions. This role is key in maintaining financial records, assisting with month-end and year-end closing processes, and providing administrative support to ensure efficient operation of the finance team. Remote working is not offered. The position is based in our Head Office in Darlington, Co Durham.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage supplier and contractor invoices and expenses, from receipt to approval and payment
- Create monthly payment applications to clients, raising invoices to process on client systems
- Run aged debtors reports, actively chasing outstanding balances
- Assist with monthly reconciliations of control accounts, bank and other financial accounts
- Support payroll processing and maintain accurate employee expense records
- Prepare and maintain financial documents and spreadsheets
- Help with the preparation of monthly financial reports and forecasts
- Maintain proper filing of financial documents for auditing and compliance
- Respond to supplier and client queries regarding payments and accounts
- Work closely with other departments to ensure accurate cost tracking and budget control
- Support the finance team during audits and month/year-end close
Qualifications
- Diploma or Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field (required)
- Professional certification or working toward ACCA, CIMA, CPA, or equivalent (preferred but not essential)
Experience
- Previous experience in an Accounts Assistant, Finance Assistant or similar role
- Experience with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Xero, Sage, SAP, or NetSuite)
- Familiarity with bookkeeping and accounting principles
Skills
- Strong numerical and data entry skills
- Strong knowledge of double entry bookkeeping and financial reconciliations
- Strong organisational skills and ability to prioritise workload effectively
- Excellent attention to detail with a focus on accuracy and compliance
- Strong knowledge of Microsoft Excel and other MS Office tools
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Other Requirements
- Willingness to occasionally work extended hours during busy periods (e.g., month-end)
