We are seeking an experienced Systems Engineer to join our team at Wabtec UK based in Burton on Trent. Our work involves supporting customers through maintenance and operation optimisation with customised solutions for spare parts, repair and overhaul activities on existing trains.

Location: Burton on Trent, Staffordshire (DE13 8EN) – (Onsite)

How will you make a difference?

As a Systems Engineer you will act as the technical specialist for our product group, delivering engineering solutions that enhance safety, reliability and performance. This is a hands‑on role requiring strong technical expertise and collaboration with customers, suppliers and internal teams.

What will your typical day look like?

  • Provide system engineering knowledge, experience and skills to Wabtec UK.
  • Act as lead engineer for the Power Collection product group.
  • Serve as technical authority for engineering change for the Wabtec UK installed base.
  • Develop, document, and deliver technical solutions for product safety, reliability growth, cost reduction and obsolescence management.
  • Produce and check technical documentation including Technical Instructions, Overhaul specifications, production queries (PQs), technical bulletins, technical reports, technical specifications, technical queries (TQs), work instructions, conditional assessments, calculations, concessions and Engineering change orders (ECOs).
  • Check and approve technical drawings, Engineering bills of materials (EBoMs), customer TIs and any technical documentation produced by mechanical engineers.
  • Manage Reliability & Life Cycle Cost (LCC) for Wabtec as OEM / design authority and maintainer.
  • Support investigations into failures of systems and components, determine root cause and present findings.
  • Provide customer support – concessions, queries, engineering issues (including warranty investigations), FAI support, conditional assessment and joint investigations, NIRs, product failure investigations (non‑NIR).
  • Act as the main technical liaison for projects, customers and suppliers; represent Wabtec at technical meetings with customers and suppliers.
  • Interface with senior project stakeholders on technical matters.
  • Conform to business processes and procedures, attend design reviews, execute PRIP for project mobilisation, attend Gate reviews.
  • Manage the project Technical hazard and Risk register in line with CSM‑RA regulations.
  • Manage Product Certification and standards compliance.
  • Support the Wabtec UK tender process – provide technical solutions for tenders.
  • Ensure tasks are completed on agreed timelines with Engineering management.
  • Perform any other duties within your capabilities, training or experience.

What do we want to know about you?

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent).
  • Experience in mechanical engineering, rail experience preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of specification, design, testing and maintenance of mechanical systems.
  • Proficiency in CAD and MS Office tools.
  • Excellent communication and decision‑making skills.
  • Ability to work independently and travel to customer/supplier sites as required.
