The Role

As a Payroll Officer, you will join an established and experienced payroll team, taking responsibility for the accurate and timely processing of payrolls for a diverse portfolio of clients. You will play a key role in ensuring payrolls are delivered accurately, efficiently and in accordance with current legislation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Process multiple client payrolls accurately and within agreed deadlines
  • Manage payrolls from initial data input through to finalisation and submission
  • Review payroll data and calculations, identifying and resolving discrepancies
  • Calculate statutory payments, deductions, adjustments and payrolled benefits
  • Process starters, leavers, salary changes, bonuses, overtime and other payroll amendments
  • Prepare and distribute payslips and relevant payroll documentation
  • Complete year-end payroll processes, including P60s and P11D-related requirements where applicable
  • Complete and submit RTI returns to HMRC accurately and within statutory deadlines
  • Deal directly with HMRC regarding PAYE, National Insurance and other payroll-related matters
  • Respond to client payroll queries promptly and professionally, providing clear and accurate advice
  • Keep up to date with changes to payroll legislation and ensure processes remain compliant
  • Maintain accurate and confidential payroll records in accordance with company policies and data protection requirements
  • Liaise effectively with clients and internal teams to ensure payroll information is received accurately and on time
  • Identify and resolve payroll issues, escalating complex matters where appropriate
  • Support the wider payroll team during busy periods and assist with process improvements
  • Provide a high standard of client service at all times

About You

  • Previous experience working in a payroll-focused role, ideally within an accountancy practice or professional services environment
  • Strong understanding of UK payroll processes, PAYE and National Insurance
  • Good knowledge of statutory payroll requirements and payroll legislation
  • Experience processing multiple payrolls or working with a varied client portfolio would be advantageous
  • Strong numerical and analytical skills with excellent attention to detail
  • High level of accuracy and the ability to identify discrepancies
  • Excellent organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple deadlines
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Confident dealing directly with clients and responding to payroll queries
  • Good IT skills, particularly Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office applications
  • Experience using payroll software and accounting systems
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a wider team
  • Proactive, reliable and committed to delivering a high standard of work
