To lead, manage and develop all aspects of VVB’s Electrical Engineering works, including the establishment and development of an Electrical Engineering team and design function to provide Engineering support for design, construction, operation and maintenance works. To develop processes to improve company performance and compliance, ensuring the company’s compliance with the Health & Safety at Work Act and various applicable regulations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop the Electrical Engineering team through individual and team development to enhance fundamental skills and experience relevant to VVB’s work scopes.
  • Establish and develop the company's Electrical design capabilities, including building upon existing software packages with complementary systems to improve design efficiencies.
  • Proficient in low and high voltage electrical design (up to 33kV level) in line with all current standards.
  • Proficient in designing typical systems such as: Lighting, LV distribution, CMS - sizing and layout, Earthing and bonding, UPS, Switchboards/LVAC, VSD’s, Lightning protection (support from specialist supplier), Control systems including DCS, PLC, SCADA and BMS.
  • Familiarity with HAZID, HAZOP and HAZCON studies as required.

Job Profile

  • Provide advice and support to the board of directors on all Electrical Engineering and Technical matters.
  • Promote multi-disciplinary working and collaboration, including working with other heads of engineering.
  • Build and grow client relationships.
  • Develop and maintain the company's Engineering and Design processes in collaboration with other heads of engineering.
  • Develop E-learning modules to support continued Electrical Engineering education across the company.
  • Develop a regular Engineers forum for lessons learnt being shared between projects and sectors and record these for future reference.
  • Establish a peer reviewing process to enhance shared learning between Engineers.
  • Have responsibility for health and safety and other legal requirements relating to the range of Electrical work the business undertakes.
  • Ensure that audits occur for projects to ensure compliance with VVB’s Engineering and Design procedures.
  • Sit on VVB Accident Investigation panels where Electrical incidents have occurred.
  • Ensure that all Electrical Engineering works undertaken are carried out by competent persons who are appropriately supervised.
  • Review VVB supply chain for compliance.
  • Support, review and provide assurance of all VVB generated Electrical design in line with all current standards, considering safety, maintainability, ease of installation, design sustainability, value engineering and environmental impact.
  • Ensure the design process for Electrical works is in line with current standards, with all suitable and required reviews including 3rd party.
  • Ensure the design risk assessment process is compliant with all legal and construction parameters.
  • Provide engineered solutions to key project problems to satisfy clients' expectations, project restrictions and budget considerations.
  • Support work winning with the development of scope documents for tenders and procurement processes.
  • Liaise with manufacturers to determine product suitability (in partnership with procurement).
  • Where required and beneficial to the business, attend during FAT, SAT and Commissioning (including carrying out) to ensure compliance with requirements.
  • Direct liaison, support and consultancy with project teams to ensure design suitability, works methodology and to solve key installation issues/constructability.
  • Keep abreast of all Electrical, Construction and relevant legislation, law, standards and best practice.

Person Specification

Technical Knowledge and Skills

  • Essential: Detailed knowledge of HSE legislation, relevant Electrical installations legislation and standards, BIM and design modelling standards, and all other associated standards and legislation.
  • Detailed knowledge of Electrical and process design.
  • Detailed knowledge of the design process and associated compliance.
  • Expert knowledge and utilisation of Electrical design software e.g. Amtech, E-tap, Dialux etc.
  • Experience with specifying equipment for use within Explosive Atmospheres ATEX, Harmonics (monitoring & correction), Power factor correction.
  • Desired: Utilisation of project planning software (MS Project), Experience generating DSEAR CompEX Responsible Person (EX14).

Qualifications

  • Essential Qualifications: Degree in Electrical Engineering, NEBOSH in Construction Health and Safety, Engineering Council Registration as Chartered Engineer (CEng), Registered member of IMechE, CIBSE, IET or other recognised Engineering Council Institution, BS 7671 (18th Edition), C&G Inspection and Testing 2391-52, Driving licence.
  • Desired Qualifications: Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Project management qualification (APM/Prince2 or equivalent), Sustainability awareness, Authorised Engineer training.

  • Essential: Collaborative, able to prioritise and delegate where necessary, decisive and works well under pressure, flexible, ‘can do’ attitude in a fast-paced environment, mentor for graduate and Electrical Engineers and others in the business with less technical background, good people management skills and strong leadership/communication qualities, fluent English speaker with good verbal & written skills at a technical level, able to establish good working relationships with many different people at different levels, ability to balance the interest of the customer with the interests of the business, forward thinking, self-motivated (company and self-development), willing to work out of hours, nights and weekends as applicable to ensure successful delivery of the scheme, willing to travel nationally (and occasionally internationally) and stay away from home as necessary, IT literate with good level of Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Desired: Good contractual and commercial awareness, Sustainability and Environmental Awareness, Legal Process understanding (called as expert witness etc.).
