Mechanical Engineer – Manufacturing Control

Due to project growth, we are seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join our technical team within Manufacturing Control, playing an integral role in our UK nuclear projects. The position sits within the Design & Delivery function, with a focus on controlling and overseeing areas such as welding and heat treatment, surface preparation, and corrosion protection.

Some of the main responsibilities of the Mechanical Engineer will include:

  • Accountable for issuing Surveillance Offers (project-specific deliverables outlining the surveillance strategy for equipment manufacturing).
  • Conduct overall risk analysis related to manufacturing operations to determine the level and scope of surveillance required.
  • Define and prescribe the surveillance documentation required from manufacturers, ensuring it aligns with project and regulatory expectations.
  • Review manufacturing documentation provided by suppliers, including:
    • Before manufacturing: technical specifications, fabrication and testing procedures, welding packages, etc.
    • During manufacturing: exemption requests, non-conformance reports (NCRs), technical queries (TQs), and other quality-related records.
  • Contribute to the final assessment of equipment surveillance activities by preparing or inputting into Clearance Notes.
  • Participate in manufacturing kick-off meetings to align expectations and define surveillance scope with suppliers.
  • Support knowledge sharing by contributing to the capture and dissemination of manufacturing OPEX (operational experience/lessons learned).
  • Provide ongoing technical support to inspectors, both onsite and remotely, to ensure consistent quality oversight and resolution of technical issues.
  • The Mechanical Engineer will play a key role in Vulcain\’s Design & Delivery team and will directly support a variety of high-profile, high-value nuclear new build projects, offering a unique opportunity to grow your career on some of the UK\’s most significant infrastructure programmes in decades.

    Preferred Profile

    • A degree (or equivalent qualification) in Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgy, or another relevant discipline.
    • Quality Control (QC) experience, ideally within highly regulated or technical environments.
    • A solid understanding of welding and fabrication, including experience reviewing welding documentation.
    • Experience with Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) and knowledge of Radiographic Testing would be a strong advantage.
    • Familiarity with design processes or an understanding of design principles.
    • Experience working with pressure equipment or other complex mechanical systems.
    • An indefinite and independent right to work in the UK, due to the level of security clearance required for work on UK nuclear sites.
