The Position: Vulcain Engineering UK is expanding their capabilities in the power and grid sector with a growing focus on battery energy storage systems (BESS). We are seeking a Principal Electrical Engineer to support the design and delivery of large-scale battery energy storage projects. This role offers the chance to work on technically complex infrastructure that underpins the UK’s transition to a low-carbon, flexible energy system.
Some of the main responsibilities of the Principal Electrical Engineer will include:
- Review design packages to ensure compliance with project requirements, UK grid codes, and relevant safety standards.
- Coordinate work packages through internal governance processes, including technical reviews, risk assessments, and quality checks.
- Serve as the technical point of contact in meetings with design teams, DNOs, and equipment suppliers.
- Work with regulators to ensure compliance, aligned with UK standards and UK Grid codes.
- Manage change requests, ensuring they are resolved and properly documented.
- Monitor project progress through to delivery, ensuring alignment with approved standards and frameworks.
- Oversee the preparation and quality of documentation, including design deliverables.
This position offers the opportunity to work on pioneering battery storage projects that are central to enabling more renewable energy on the UK grid. You will apply your technical expertise to ensure safe, compliant, and reliable project delivery while building specialist knowledge in one of the fastest-growing areas of the energy transition.
Preferred Profile: Alongside a commitment to our values of Care & Compassion, Performance, Team Spirit, and Inclusiveness, we are looking for individuals who can bring the following:
- Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Power Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Experience working in a relevant industry - battery energy storage systems (BESS), large-scale battery farms, renewable energy projects, or grid-connected power infrastructure, with exposure to high-voltage electrical systems, substations, or solar PV integration.
- Strong understanding of UK grid codes, connection requirements, and protection systems.
- Familiarity with battery safety standards, including fire safety and thermal management.
- Experience reviewing electrical design packages, technical drawings, or specifications.
- Ability to identify, track, and mitigate technical risks during design and delivery.
- Motivated to contribute to the UK’s decarbonisation and energy flexibility goals.
Please note that visa sponsorship is not guaranteed and is assessed on a case-by-case basis, depending on role criticality and project needs. Many of our UK projects require high-level security clearance, meaning we can often only consider candidates with an existing, indefinite right to work in the UK. Exceptionally, we may consider visa sponsorship for applicants with niche experience aligned to our core work (e.g. EPR/nuclear new build).
