VSI provides language localisation and media services, including lip-sync dubbing, voice-over, subtitling, translation, transcreation and more, in over 80 languages worldwide. Founded in 1989 and headquartered in London, VSI owns and operates 28 studio facilities across Europe, the US, the Middle East and Latin America with trusted partnerships in Asia. VSI's Subtitling department is responsible for providing subtitling technical, linguistic and style guide expertise to the business, upholding the company's high linguistic and technical standards whilst carrying out QC, subtitling, proofreading, test evaluations and subtitling tool training amongst other tasks. This department will also be responsible for implementation of AI tools such as machine translation and speech to text.
We are looking for an experienced and proactive individual to join us in the new role of Subtitling Tool and Workflow Specialist in the Subtitling department. Reporting to the Subtitling Manager you will be responsible for reviewing client subtitling specs and translating them to our subtitling tools, namely Ooona, and building the necessary workflows.
As the experts in subtitling specs, the Subtitling department plays a key role in ensuring that project management teams have the necessary information to share with freelancers before subtitling work commences. You will need to be technically minded, have an in-depth understanding of various subtitling quality specs, be solution-focused and have strong communication skills. You will speak English to mother-tongue standard, have excellent time management and organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise tasks, manage the demands of a fast-paced environment, and have demonstrable experience in working to tight deadlines.
As Subtitling Tool and Workflow Specialist, your responsibilities will include, but will not be limited to:
- Demonstrating a deep understanding of subtitling project management workflows, including steps from upload of material, to subtitling to QC to final file export
- Demonstrating Ooona Manager and Toolkit expertise with an in-depth knowledge of workflow building blocks (steps, tasks), file types, file formats, exports, settings
- Working closely with the Tool and Workflow Specialist to create workflows in Ooona and apply settings and configurations in Ooona Toolkit (and/or EZTitles) and in Ooona Manager
- Liaising with project managers to create workflows in Ooona Manager, and apply Toolkit settings and any necessary configurations
- Demonstrating expertise by providing consultation on new complex subtitling/translation-related project briefs
- Supporting PMs, QCers and freelancers to troubleshoot any issues
- Liaising with technical department to ensure connection points between Subtitling tools and other company tools are taken into account when any changes/updates are required
- Being responsible for the data management of subtitling product, steps and task names
- Training new staff/freelancers on any relevant services, software/tools and guidelines used, as required
- Supporting the Subtitling Manager with: Reviewing client subtitling specs, ensuring correct questions are raised or suggestions put forward to the client, recreating/adapting the spec where necessary so it's relevant for suppliers, and preparing the QC team with the relevant checks in preparation for the QC stage
- Ensuring VSI's subtitling guidelines, clients' guidelines and training material are kept up to date
- Testing of department tools, such as Ooona Toolkit and contributing to the speccing and development of department tools
Role Requirements
In order to be successful for this role, candidates must demonstrate the following:
- Three years' proven subtitling experience, working with various subtitling specs and software, including Ooona and EZTitles
- Three years' previous experience managing subtitling workflows
- Subtitling project management experience a plus
- Thorough working knowledge of subtitling file formats and any limitations/compatibility issues
- English mother tongue/Command of English to mother-tongue standard
- A solution-focused attitude and high motivation
- The ability to remain calm whilst under pressure
- Ability to develop and improve workflows and implement new ways of working
- Advanced Microsoft Office skills, including Excel and Microsoft Word
- Strong reporting skills
- Excellent problem-solving skills and numeracy
- Attention to detail and accuracy
