- Responsible to the Commander for:
- The Engine Department and the safety of the crew, machinery, and the environment directly under their control.
- The implementation of the Company's policies contained in the company's procedures and other official instructions related to all machinery operations, safety, and environmental protection.
- Ensuring that the Officers and crew of the Engine Department receive formal familiarisation training upon boarding the vessel, through the designated officer on board.
- The discipline on board and the performance evaluation of all Officers and crew members of the Engine Department.
- The safe operation of the machinery and technical plant of the vessel.
- The implementation of the Lock Out Tag Out system.
- The monitoring of the main propulsion performance and auxiliary machinery.
- The precise monitoring and control of fuel and lubricating oil consumption of the vessel, as well as the status of the supplied quantities (bunkers).
- The refuelling of fuel, lubricating oils, and other fluids as appropriate.
- The maintenance of the main propulsion, auxiliary machinery, cargo handling equipment, and deck machinery.
- The compliance with statutory and classification requirements regarding machinery and relevant spaces.
- The accurate recording of all operational parameters of the machinery by the watchkeeping officers/service officers in the machinery logbook.
- The reporting of any accidents and/or damage to the machinery or technical plant of the vessel.
- The supervision and training of Engine Cadets.
- Acting as the Ship Safety Officer, along with the duties outlined in the Ship Safety Plan (noting that this role may be performed by the Chief Officer).
- The assessment and mitigation of all identified risks on board, in cooperation with other members of the vessel's management team.
- Ensuring that files and technical drawings on board are updated and maintained by the designated officers.
- Complying with the vessel's budget allocation and the Company's purchasing procedures.
- The accurate maintenance of all records relating to fuel oil, used oil, and sludge on board (Oil Record Book – Machinery, Engine Room Sounding Book).
- Supporting the Commander in all aspects of the vessel's operation and acting as the Company's technical representative when dealing with third parties.
- Implementing and monitoring the planned maintenance system (PMS) established on board.
- Ensuring that all critical equipment and machinery are in good working condition and that any defects are repaired or reported effectively to the Ship Management Office, through the Commander.
- Fully participating in VMS management meetings on board.
- Executing any other tasks or responsibilities as required by the Company.
