Key Priorities
- Support the vision and direction of the school
- Support teachers and Learning Mentors to deliver an engaging specialist curriculum within the academy for an alternative pathway for KS5 pupils
- Support and facilitate effective learning and teaching for KS5 pupils accessing the pathway
- Deploy and create resources efficiently and effectively to meet specific objectives in line with the needs of the group
- Ensure effective pastoral care and behaviour support for the KS5 group
- Adopt a therapeutic approach, understanding the individual needs of the whole child
Teaching and Learning
- Support teaching staff to ensure high quality teaching is delivered to students across a number of subject areas
- Support teaching staff to provide and maintain an environment and behaviour for learning which promotes and secures good teaching, effective learning and high standards of achievement
- Support the curriculum and its assessment; work with the teachers and Learning Mentors to monitor and evaluate it in order to identify areas for improvement
- Support students with their emotional health and wellbeing by taking a therapeutic approach
- Develop key relationships with students and parents and carers
- Engage in outreach to ensure all students’ needs are met
Partnership Working
- Seek opportunities to invite parents and carers into The Axis Academy to enrich student experience and promote the Academy’s value to the wider community
- Collaborate with staff to actively promote the British values, academic, spiritual, moral, social, emotional and cultural well-being of students and their families
Health and Safety / Child Protection
- Help ensure that health and safety standards meet statutory requirements, monitoring health and safety matters within the school, ensuring that all staff take reasonable care for the health and safety of themselves and others
- Help ensure that Child Protection and Safeguarding procedures and Department of Health assessments of Children in Need are rigorously complied with, and that the welfare and health and safety of students are of prime consideration
- Promote the safety and well-being of students and staff
- Ensure good order and behaviour of students and staff
- Engage with CPD opportunities to effectively fulfil your role and achieve the best possible outcomes for students

Desired Criteria
Qualifications and Training
- NVQ Level 3 Teaching Assistant or higher
- Relevant qualifications or training in SEMH, behaviour support, trauma-informed or therapeutic approaches
- Training or accreditation linked to employability, mentoring, youth work or life skills
- NVQ Level 2 for Teaching Assistants or equivalent qualification/experience in education, youth work, care or a related field
- GCSE English and Maths at Grade A*–C (9–4) or Level 2 equivalent
Experience
- Experience working with SEND and/or SEMH learners, particularly at KS4 or Post-16, in functional skills and life skills or employability programmes
- Experience of mentoring, coaching or providing 1:1 support to young people
- Experience supporting accredited or non-examined qualifications
- Confidence supporting portfolio-based learning and practical evidence gathering
- Understanding of how learning links to Preparation for Adulthood outcomes
- Experience contributing to EHCP targets or review evidence
- Experience working with young people with mental health needs or adverse childhood experiences
- Experience in de-escalation, regulation strategies, Zones of Regulation or similar approaches
- Confidence acting as a mentor or trusted adult for Post-16 learners
- Experience supporting learners with transition to adulthood, including independence, confidence and employability
Teaching and Learning Support
- Ability to support the delivery of a bespoke, alternative curriculum tailored to individual learner needs
- Confidence supporting learning across a range of areas including personal development and wellbeing, employability and life skills, functional English and maths
- Ability to help create a calm, structured and purposeful learning environment
- Flexibility and creativity in adapting resources and approaches to meet learner needs
SEMH, Therapeutic and Pastoral Support
- A strong understanding of the importance of emotional regulation, relationship-based practice and consistency for SEMH learners
- Ability to take a therapeutic, trauma-informed approach, recognising behaviour as communication
- Patience, empathy and the ability to remain calm under pressure
- Confidence and self-esteem building
Post-16 Support, Mentoring and Work Experience
- Willingness to support learners with the transition to adulthood, including independence, confidence and employability
- Ability to work flexibly across school-based learning and off-site activities where appropriate
- Strong organisational skills to support routines, transitions and learner engagement
Safeguarding, EHCP and Team Working
- Secure understanding of safeguarding and child protection responsibilities
- Commitment to promoting the safety, welfare and wellbeing of all students
- Ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team, following guidance from teachers, SEND Co and senior staff
- Professional, respectful communication with colleagues, families and external partners
