Role Purpose

Provide advice, information and assistance to applicants who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. Help applicants explore housing options and find suitable accommodation that meets their needs. Collaborate with partners and agencies to prevent and reduce homelessness in the community.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Offer advice on homelessness prevention, housing options, tenure rights, and security of tenure. Make advice accessible and help applicants avoid or resolve homelessness and secure long-term housing solutions.
  • Gather relevant information from applicants, including financial and health details, and verify as necessary. Communicate with statutory and voluntary agencies to support decision-making.
  • Progress homeless applications under current legislation, ensuring compliance with the Homelessness Code of Guidance.
  • Assess circumstances and needs to identify causes of homelessness and housing/support needs.
  • Develop personalized housing plans with applicants to help them retain or find accommodation.
  • Decide on duties owed to applicants (e.g., interim, prevention, relief duties), process applications within target times, and ensure decisions comply with legislation.
  • Make referrals to partner agencies for issues like private rented accommodation, benefits, relationship breakdown, debt, mental health, domestic abuse, rough sleeping, and complex needs.

Requirements

  • Good knowledge of Homelessness legislation (Housing Act 1996, Homelessness Act 2002, Suitability Order 2012, Homelessness Reduction Act 2017)
  • Understanding of Landlord and tenant law
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Minimum of 3 years experience in a housing-related role (housing association, local authority, or housing department)
  • Experience dealing with the public, especially vulnerable applicants
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team
