Job Description
Role Purpose
- Accountable to the relevant Group Manager or Principal Engineer for the carrying out of safety inspections of the highway, managing minor repairs, and responding to service requests from residents.
Responsibilities
- Assist in the production of contract documents.
- Produce estimates and carry out measurements for costing purposes.
- Carry out site measurements and inspection preparatory to payment and approval of contractors’ work.
- Design and supervise minor schemes.
- Supervise minor maintenance contracts. Initiate works within limits of delegated authority, prepare variation orders for authorisation, check contractor’s accounts and certify payments.
- Issue instructions and give guidance on site. Stop or reject works on site which violate specification or codes of practice and safety standards. Order minor works within limits of delegated authority.
- Assist the relevant Maintenance Manager in the development amongst staff of a quality management approach to work and a customer care attitude to clients.
- Participate in the recruitment and selection process for vacancies in the department as required.
- Report on insurance claims against contractors, outside bodies and the Council itself and act as a main witness in court appearances on behalf of the Council and its insurers.
- Act as liaison officer on behalf of the client and Council on matters relating to work.
- Give technical advice to other Departments and Authorities.
- Utilise fully any computerised systems such as Symology, EDF Energy, GIS etc., available to improve efficiency. Enter data and receive output daily from the system provided according to agreed procedures.
Requirements
- Highway inspections are undertaken on an area basis and you’ll be provided full guidance and support. Experience using Symology is desirable.
- A full driving license and the use of your own vehicle is essential (mileage is paid at current rates).
- Experience working in a similar role in the past, be committed and have the ability to work individually but contribute to the wider team, working in a supportive and trusting environment.
- Experience in a range of engineering disciplines.
- Being proactive and helpful and possess a customer-focused attitude.
