Wheelchair Dancing Class Volunteer

Dancing on Wheels New Forest is a wheelchair dancing class held in the afternoons on the second Wednesday of each month. It is open to all wheelchair users interested in dance. Participants can explore movement, music, rhythm, and flow in these fun, accessible, and creative classes. Sessions are led by experienced dance tutors and are designed to accommodate everyone, whether using a self-propelled wheelchair, a powered wheelchair, or accompanied by a companion.

The classes take place in the accessible ballroom at New Milton Memorial Centre, Whitefield Road, New Milton BH25 6DE, with easy parking outside. Arrival is from 3pm for socialising, followed by the session from 3.30pm to 4.30pm, based on a different musical theme each month.

Background

Currently sponsored by Culture in Common with funding ending in March 2025, we aim to involve more wheelchair users in the community for their health and wellbeing. We are the only wheelchair dancing class in the New Forest, and we are interested in starting additional classes if there is demand from diverse groups interested in dance.

The initiative was inspired by my son Simon, who lives in a care home bungalow in Hordle. He previously attended a wheelchair dancing class in Southampton, which closed following the death of its founder and teacher. There is a community need for such activities in our area.

Skills

We are seeking one or two volunteers to assist with monthly sessions. Responsibilities include setting up tables and chairs, serving drinks and biscuits, welcoming members and their companions, socialising during the refreshments period, helping set up the dance floor with cones and props (flags, ribbons, wrist bells), assisting with parachute activities, and helping push wheelchair users to give their companions a break.

  • Volunteers are covered by Zurich insurance.
  • A written role description is available and may be provided if needed.

When can I volunteer?

Available on the second Wednesday of each month in the afternoon.
