Repair Cafe Volunteers

Portchester Community Centre is starting a repair cafe in Spring 2025.

Repair cafes (also called \’repair hubs\’ or \’repair corners\’) are places where volunteers repair household items, share tools, and teach others repair skills to keep broken household items out of landfill. Repair hubs and cafes allow visitors to assess whether their items can be fixed by the experts or by themselves. We are a charitable organisation and believe that a repair cafe is a fantastic opportunity to pass on skills, keep items out of landfill, and become more sustainable.

If you would like to help out as a volunteer, there are many ways you can do this, not just as a repairer. We need people to triage (ask a few questions and book in each repair) and help out with the refreshments as well.

Skills

Our friends at the Repair Cafe in Gosport said: \”Many people think that they don\’t have enough skills to help people, but this is a false impression. The Repair Cafe can be much simpler, including the occurrence we have about every 6 months of someone who believes their vacuum cleaner is broken but just needs the bag changing.\”

We are looking for:

  • people who can sew, fix bikes, gadgets, and gizmos, and who would like to pass on skills to others.
  • people who can help organise the cafe, triage when booking in a repair.
  • people who can help us make tea and coffee for visitors and keep volunteers topped up with tea and biscuits.
