The Heart Of Down Red Squirrel Group is looking for enthusiastic and committed volunteers to assist with the recovery and conservation of our native Red Squirrel population across central Co Down. We currently have active groups working in Derrymore House, Bessbrook, and we welcome anyone with an interest in wildlife and the outdoors to get involved.
As a volunteer, you’ll have the opportunity to take part in a variety of rewarding, hands‑on activities, including:
- Wildlife Monitoring & Survey
- Checking and maintaining trail cameras
- Collecting and reviewing wildlife data
- Monitoring squirrel activity across sites
- Feeding Station Maintenance
- Ensuring squirrel feeders are stocked with food
- Checking equipment and replacing batteries where required
- Public Engagement & Education
- Assisting with guided walks at our sites
- Supporting pop‑up events and educational talks
- Engaging with visitors and answering general questions about conservation work
- Habitat & Conservation Projects
- Helping build and install nest boxes, feeders, and other structures
- Assisting with habitat improvement efforts where needed
- Team Activities
- Participating in regular group meetups, including practical conservation days
- Enjoying social elements such as BBQs and group events
Additional Opportunities: Beyond Red Squirrel conservation, volunteers may also have the chance to contribute to our broader wildlife projects, including work with barn owls, hedgehogs, and other native species.
