Based in South Essex, BASIS (www.basissouthessex.org.uk ) is a well-established charity working to improve theindependence and quality of life of those who have visual impairment, theirfamilies and carers. BASIS believes thatit is important to raise awareness of the needs of visually impaired people tothe sighted community, changing attitudes, thereby bringing both groups to acloser understanding of each other.
The organisation provides a diverserange of activities and support to its beneficiaries. With strong links toGuide Dogs for the Blind, RNIB and the NHS, BASIS offers a unique serviceprovision for the area.
This is an exciting opportunity to getinvolved with this 20 year old organisation as it seeks to grow anddevelop. Until recently BASIS was run byits board of trustees on a voluntary basis.Recent funding has created a number of paid posts to provide operationalrunning of the organisation and enabling the board to take on a more strategicfocus.
Having secured funding from BigLottery and undergone a review of governance BASIS is about to embark on aperiod of growth and development. Strongfinancial oversight is critical to this along with exploring new avenues offinance and funding. The new treasurerwill therefore be able to enjoy making a real difference to this organisation,its beneficiaries and shaping its financial future.
Skills
The role may appeal to someone who hasproven financial expertise and possibly an interest in health or social care,and those who wish to give something back.The current trustees identified how rewarding it is to see people on ajourney and see how something that you do makes such a difference.
BASIS are looking to appoint someonewith proven financial expertise gained at a senior level, to complement thecurrent board in its role as a governing body: setting strategy and ensuringexemplary governance and fiscal control. The successful candidate must showan understanding of the issues facing blind and partially sighted people.
Trustee meetings currently held Thursday afternoon/evenings and the AGM in December. Work can be undertaken in your own time.
