South Essex Wildlife Hospital receives hundreds of enquiries every year from people wishing to get involved and help. We are very grateful for offers of help; however, it is very important that the right person is given the correct type of job to do. Helping injured animals is often (nearly always) emotionally upsetting.

We require volunteer rescuers who can support us in locating and delivering to the hospital animals that have been injured or who are unwell. In general, this includes larger animals like Foxes, Swans, Badgers, or Deer, and also helping to transport small patients when members of the public are unable to get them to our hospital.

You will be a volunteer who can work alone and have excellent map reading skills. We cannot state when you will be needed, as those who require rescuing don’t give us notice. We will work with your availability and provide the equipment needed to support you with your rescuing as required. Training is provided, but you must be confident in handling animals of all sizes.

  • Skills
  • Confident in handling animals of all sizes.
  • Wildlife rescue often has sad outcomes, so you should be prepared emotionally.
  • Due to the nature of the volunteering, this opportunity can be ad hoc. The organisation will discuss your availability.
