Sporting Memories needs volunteers who can communicate well with others and are able to support club members who may have memory or physical health problems. The most important skill is to be able to listen to club members and help them to get involved in the discussion. You will be part of a team of volunteers who will work together to improve the well-being of club members. One of our volunteers has said: "It is rewarding watching club members become more confident and start talking about their favourite sport."

Our volunteer induction process involves:

  • An initial phone call to have a chat about volunteering with us.
  • An online training session re planning and running a club (3 hours).
  • Fortnightly online sessions where you can meet other volunteers and be supported.

Experience required: No experience is required, just an ability to engage and communicate with people and to support those who find it difficult to share their memories or have health problems. A sense of humour and an ability to listen to others.

Travel expenses: Expenses are paid monthly or in advance if necessary. Volunteers can claim expenses if they need to travel to a club (mileage, bus or train fares).

Support: An initial online training session (3 hours) and Dementia Awareness sessions available.

Frequency & commitment: The Club meets on Tuesdays 10.30-12 at Polkemmet Lodge, 7a East Main St, Whitburn. Volunteers (aged 18-25) taking part in this opportunity are eligible to claim Saltire Awards hours for their activity.
