The Federation (FWS) or (Fed) is an organisation led by writers for writers, giving them a platform to showcase their work and a monthly newsletter. Our 1850 members are predominantly based in Scotland, however we have members in all parts of the UK and in all continents of the world.
The Board of Trustees meet monthly via Zoom or in person. The Fed has charitable status and does not charge its members to join, relying on donations and income from our anthology and competitions. We publish a bi‑annual anthology of our members' work and hold an annual open writing competition together with other events.
Our AGM this year is on 20 June 2026 and we are looking for someone with the necessary skills to fill the voluntary Treasurer role which will become vacant then. The role generally involves around a couple of hours per week; however during our competition in April more hours are required as entrants pay for their entries via PayPal and bank transfer. Accurate records need to be kept. Also, at the financial year end on 31 May when the OSCR (charity regulator) annual report is prepared, this includes our Receipts and Payments Accounts, which are signed off by an Independent Financial Examiner.
Currently the Treasurer is also the OSCR rep to enable them to lodge the accounts and keep the register of Board Members up to date. You would be part of a Board of Trustees and would be given full support to settle you in as the current Treasurer will remain on the Board until September to mentor you and other new Board Members.
Experience required:
- A good understanding of figures and a knowledge of receipts and payments accounts would be an advantage; however, full training and mentorship will be available.
- Good communication and presentation skills would also be useful.
Travel expenses: If required travel expenses for a Board member can be paid.
Restrictions: Volunteers aged 18‑25 taking part in this opportunity are eligible to claim Saltire Awards hours for their activity.
