The role
We are hiring a KYB & Merchant Operations Analyst to sit at the intersection of Compliance, Operations and Merchant Support. This role is responsible for executing high-quality KYB reviews and acting as first-line operational support for merchants during onboarding and early lifecycle. You will be a critical part of ensuring we scale safely, efficiently, and with strong regulatory discipline. This is not a call-centre role. It is an analytical, process-driven position with direct exposure to real payment flows, regulated partners, and complex merchant models.
Your Mission
- KYB & Compliance Operations (primary focus)
- Conduct KYB reviews on merchants across the UK and EU
- Review corporate documents, ownership structures, UBOs and directors
- Perform sanctions, PEP and adverse media screening
- Assess merchant business models, use cases and payment flows
- Support Enhanced Due Diligence processes by gathering evidence and preparing structured case summaries
- Maintain clear audit trails and documentation in line with regulatory expectations
- Escalate risk issues to the MLRO or Head of Compliance with concise, well-reasoned analysis
- Keep merchant risk profiles and records up to date
- Maintain clean audit trails and defensible notes in FirstAML/case systems; escalate suspicions to the MLRO.
- Ensure alignment with MLRs 2017, JMLSG, FCA, FATF and PSD2/PSRs.
- Financial Crime & Risk Operations
- Partner with Sales/Onboarding/Legal to clear documentation gaps and apply risk-based requirements.
- Contribute to merchant monitoring (early-warning indicators, chargeback/fraud patterns, usage vs. declared activity, velocity checks).
- Support remediation, QA sampling and control testing; feed insights into policy/process updates.
- Merchant Operations & Support
- Act as a trusted technical contact for live merchants: triage/resolve integration issues, daily errors and escalations for Merchants
- Troubleshoot/reproduce problems; propose fixes/workarounds; own communications while coordinating with Engineering for complex cases.
- Operate the Plain platform to consolidate Slack/Teams/WhatsApp/Telegram/email into one queue; prioritise tickets, track SLAs and drive closure.
- Create/update knowledge-base articles and runbooks to reduce repeat issues and enable self-serve.
- Enablement & Improvement
- Document repeatable onboarding standards and checklists by merchant type/MCC/geo.
- Identify and implement automations (registry lookups, bank account validation, screening rules) to increase throughput and quality.
- Provide feedback loops to Product/Engineering on risk controls, integration friction and policy-driven UX.
About you
- 1–3+ years in KYB/KYC/AML, onboarding, or financial-crime operations (FinTech/payments preferred).
- Preferred experience in the mobile payments, merchant acquiring, account-to-account or fintech.
- Strong grasp of corporate KYB: UBO discovery, complex structures, controller verification, merchant site/app reviews, MCC risk, expected vs. actual activity.
- Hands-on with screening/case tools (FirstAML, World-Check, Dow Jones, LexisNexis, etc.).
- Ability to interpret/apply MLRs 2017, JMLSG, FATF; familiarity with PSD2/PSRs.
- Crisp written reasoning and defensible due-diligence notes; calm, diplomatic escalation style.
- Comfort in a fast-paced, regulated environment with shifting priorities.
Nice to have
- Exposure to card-not-present risk, chargebacks, fraud signals and monitoring rules.
- Familiarity with CRM/case systems, company registries (Companies House, OpenCorporates), basic SQL/log reading.
- Experience with payments integrations/APIs and Postman/cURL-level debugging.
