About The Role
We are seeking a commercially minded Senior Manager to join Volta's tax function and lead delivery on deals, structuring, and modelling.
This role would suit someone looking to move in-house at a fast-scaling, capital-intensive platform.
Reporting to the VP of Tax, this is a hands‑on delivery role.
The Senior Manager will lead deal workstreams, build and stress‑test tax models, and monitor governance to ensure tax structures are operating as intended with genuine scope for the remit to grow as the function and business scale.
Key Responsibilities
- Deal Execution & Structuring
- Lead the day‑to‑day tax workstream on live transactions – fundraising and capital raises, infrastructure investments and acquisitions, joint ventures, financing and refinancing.
- Execute the technical analysis and implementation of tax structures agreed with the VP of Tax, across corporate entities, investments/JVs, and debt and equity financing.
- Coordinate tax due diligence, documentation and completion mechanics with Finance, Capital Markets, Corporate Development, Legal and external advisers.
- Review commercial contracts and financing documentation from a tax perspective, flagging issues and options to the VP of Tax.
- Bring forward clear recommendations on technical questions, with the commercial and risk trade‑offs spelled out, for the VP of Tax to decide.
- Tax Modelling & Commercial Analysis
- Own the build and maintenance of tax models and supporting schedules for investments, financing structures and transactions.
• Model cash‑tax outcomes and sensitivities, including
- Tax depreciation and capital allowances
- Interest deductibility and financing scenarios
- Loss utilisation and group relief
- Withholding taxes, repatriation and transfer‑pricing charges
- VAT and other indirect‑tax cash flows
- Restructuring, refinancing and exit scenarios
- Feed agreed tax assumptions into the wider financial models, working closely with Finance and Capital Markets.
- Pressure‑test tax assumptions prepared by internal teams and advisers for technical accuracy and consistency.
- Translate the tax impact into terms deal teams can use directly – cash flow, valuation and investor returns.
- International Tax
- Provide occasional support to the compliance team as needed, covering gaps or peak periods across the tax compliance calendar.
- Stay broadly aware of the transfer‑pricing policy, permanent‑establishment position, withholding‑tax/repatriation mechanics and VAT/GST processes, escalating anything relevant from deal or modelling work to the team who owns it.
- Flag material international tax developments relevant to live deals or models.
- Governance & Risk
- Help operate Volta's tax governance framework and controls on a day‑to‑day basis and keep the tax risk register current.
- Build and maintain supporting documentation for tax positions, transactions and inter‑company arrangements.
- Manage the working relationship with Big Four and legal advisers on live matters, escalating scope, cost or quality issues.
- Support tax authority enquiries, audits and ruling applications.
- Business Partnering
- Act as the day‑to‑day tax contact for Finance, Legal, Capital Markets, Corporate Development and Strategy on live workstreams.
- Give practical, timely tax input on new projects and initiatives, translated into cash flow, returns and capital‑efficiency impact.
- Prepare materials and analysis for the VP of Tax ahead of CFO, leadership, investor and lender conversations.
- Take ownership of agreed workstreams end‑to‑end, escalating judgement calls and anything strategically significant to the VP of Tax.
- Process & Team Support
- Help the VP of Tax roll out new processes, controls and systems as the function scales.
- Manage or mentor junior tax analyst/associates as the team grows.
- Identify opportunities for automation and standardisation in day‑to‑day tax processes and modelling.
About You
Experience & Qualifications
- Strong relevant tax experience, typically Big Four Senior Manager to Associate Director level, or the in‑house equivalent – someone used to executing complex cross‑border deals rather than only advising on them.
- Professional qualification: CTA, ACA, CA or equivalent.
- Hands‑on experience structuring cross‑border investments and financing.
- Solid technical grounding in international corporate tax – transfer pricing, withholding taxes, permanent establishment and tax‑treaty matters.
- Proven tax‑modelling ability, comfortable translating technical rules into cash‑flow, valuation and investor‑return outputs.
- Experience coordinating multi‑jurisdiction compliance and external advisers.
Skills & Attributes
- Execution‑focused and detail‑oriented, with good judgement about what to elevate and when.
- Comfortable owning a workstream end‑to‑end while operating within a strategy set by someone else.
- Strong project‑management skills, coordinating multiple internal and external stakeholders at once.
- A clear communicator, able to explain complex tax positions to non‑tax audiences.
- Pragmatic and collaborative, energised by building good process in a fast‑moving environment.
Desirable Experience
- Background in private equity, infrastructure funds, real assets, energy or digital infrastructure.
- Time in a start‑up or rapidly scaling international organisation.
- Exposure to data centres or other capital‑intensive infrastructure businesses.
- Familiarity with UK, European and US tax environments.
- Experience with tax accounting, provisions and cash‑tax forecasting.
