We own and operate a wide range of specialist rail plant.

Our teams work in collaboration with our clients on a broad variety of activities, from small installation projects through to large complex engineering schemes across the UK.

Our highly skilled people hold competencies to operate and maintain a variety of on track machines such as tampers and ballast regulators, through to Kirow cranes and RRV's with specialist attachments.

We work with clients across main line railways, depots, overground mass transit networks and tramways, along with private sidings and heritage railways, delivering a variety of projects, including maintenance, overhead line installations, bridge installations and track renewals.

We have a fleet of On-Track Machines (OTM) working on a long term contract with Network Rail to deliver mechanised track maintenance and infrastructure enhancements to help transform and maintain the UK rail network.

Today we are also part of the East Coast Digital Programme (ECDP), delivering the European Train Control System (ETCS) on the East Coast South Mainline.

An opportunity has arisen for a Fitter to join Volker Rail Plant working within the Hired Plant & Equipment (HP&E) team based in Frodingham with travel throughout the UK.

The HP&E department specialises in supplying self-operated rail maintenance plant and equipment to the rail industry.

We have a number of Platform Basket Evo Rail Mobile Elevated Working Platforms, providing a solution to our clients working at height needs focusing predominantly on working on overhead line equipment.

All our machines are serviced to a vigorous maintenance regime by a resource pool of qualified Fitters giving the client the option of Fitter cover when the machines are operational.

We also have rail specific Small Plant and Equipment, providing specialist PWAY and Welding equipment to Volker Rail internal businesses.

Key Duties will include, but are not limited to

  • Key Duties
  • Carry out maintenance, repairs, overhauls, etc. of plant and machinery to laid down technical and safety standards in line with personal certificated competence and for which you have been trained and authorised to use.
  • Operate specialist rail equipment to the correct standards and processes.
  • Work to relevant procedures and in accordance with current specifications, ensuring workplaces are kept clean and tidy.
  • Record all work carried out on the relevant document and sign off all work done.
  • Obtain materials from stores and return defective materials correctly labelled for warranty, repair or scrapping as required by laid down procedures.
  • Ensure that all work is carried out safely and in accordance with relevant Rules, Regulations, Group Standards and Work Instructions.
  • Delivery of Hired Plant and Equipment to sites using Volker Rail vehicles which fall within scope of personal licence and Road Vehicle Driving Permit.

About you

The successful candidate will be required to work to an operational roster, based on 160 hours over a 4 week period.

This can include any combination of days, nights, weekends, bank holiday and lodging away from home.

One weekend during the period will be non-rostered.

  • Be either a trained apprentice in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or possess an NVQ level 3 (mechanical or electrical) or equivalent
  • Proven engineering experience within an engineering field
  • Demonstrable experience within construction/railway industry operating similar machines
  • Have a responsible attitude and high level of safety awareness
  • Proficient in MS office applications (Microsoft Word & Excel)
  • Pro-active approach with good communication and organisational skills
  • Hold a full and valid UK driving licence
