This is a full-time position based in our Head Office in Doncaster for a Pre-Contract Sustainability Manager. The role sits within our HSQES Department and will work closely with our Work Winning and operational teams to embed sustainability principles into VolkerRail bids. The Pre-Contract Sustainability Manager plays a critical role to ensure that sustainability commitments, legislative and client requirements are integrated into pre-contract activities to support our competitive position and deliver on VolkerRail’s corporate ESG objectives. Our priority sustainability themes cover carbon management, climate resilience, circular economy, ecology and biodiversity, and social value.
This is a great opportunity for someone with experience delivering environmental contract requirements on construction projects in rail or other sectors looking to move into a corporate role. This role will help shape the sustainability outcomes of VolkerRail's rail infrastructure construction projects and services contracts in the UK.
Key Responsibilities- Lead sustainability input for pre-selection, tenders and bids, ensuring alignment with corporate ESG objectives and client requirements.
- Interpret ITT sustainability and environmental requirements, advising on risks, assumptions, commitments and compliance.
- Identify environmental and social value risks and opportunities at pre‑contract stage, embedding mitigation and initiatives into tender submissions.
- Advise on required environmental permits, licences, consents, associated timescales and costs.
- Draft and review high‑scoring sustainability responses for tenders, securing internal approvals for proposed commitments.
- Work collaboratively with internal teams, joint venture partners and our supply chain to shape strong sustainability propositions.
- Support bid pricing through sustainability resourcing forecasts, programmes and direct costs.
- Produce sustainability case studies and award submissions to promote best practice and support external recognition.
- Experience in managing environmental risks and opportunities on construction and/or infrastructure projects is essential.
- An understanding of social value/community investment would assist though suitable training and internal support will be provided in this area.
- Strong understanding of sustainability frameworks and environmental legislation.
- Qualified environment/sustainability professional with a degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability or a related field.
- Practitioner, or higher, Member of the Institute of Sustainability and Environmental Professionals (ISEP).
- Capable of producing clear, persuasive written content tailored to tender and client requirements.
- Confident to seek out and influence the adoption of innovative, value-adding sustainability solutions.
- Comfortable working under pressure to tight deadlines, and ideally have experience supporting work winning/bid teams on sustainability content.
- Demonstrate positive collaborative behaviours to develop sustainability propositions supported by other bid workstream leads and Joint Venture/Alliance partner organisations.
