Volker Rail Major Projects is an expert in collaborative working through joint ventures and alliance schemes.

Collaborative working agreements are a proven strategy for delivering large, complex railway projects, and through its strong relationships with other major contractors, Volker Rail Major Projects has helped to deliver several of the biggest rail projects over the last decade.

The mission of the TRU East Alliance is to transform the East of Leeds route allowing people to travel faster, more reliably and in greater comfort between the North's great cities.

Providing passengers with more choice, more seats and better facilities on a safer, cleaner, more environmentally friendly railway.

The TRU East project is broken down into multiple overlapping projects.

Project E1 which is currently in build and planned to complete in December 2024.

With the remaining projects E2,3,4 and Shipley planned to complete in 2028.

The project works include full new electrification between Leeds and York and include significant and complex renewals works at Neville Hill and Church Fenton.

The works also include a new depot at Shipley, and line speed enhancement and Journey time improvement works along the route between Leeds and York.

We are looking to recruit a Project Engineer - OLE to join our Major Projects team, working as part of the high-profile

TRU East Alliance project based at Gascoigne Wood (LS25 6JE) and Cross Green, Leeds with travel between Leeds, York, and Shipley.

Key duties will include

  • Check and verify that OLE construction work is undertaken in accordance with the approved design, is compliant with client requirements and meets the required quality standard.
  • Completing, reviewing or overseeing the recording of quality checks on site using digital / app based software.
  • Provide guidance and support as necessary to site teams to ensure that methodologies and processes for work delivery are developed specifically around the constraints of the design, any risks identified and the access strategy.
  • Effectively communicate the status and progress of ongoing construction work, including issues or non-compliances and the impact on programme.
  • Draft project specific documents as instructed, including Work Package Plans, Task Briefing Sheets, methodologies, Inspection test plans, Quality check sheets.
  • Undertake all work in accordance with all relevant client and/or Volker Rail Standards and Instructions.
  • Raise technical queries and field change requests.
  • Providing technical support, assistance or guidance to on site construction teams in line with project and system design drawings and literature.
  • Checking of retuned quality paperwork for compliance prior to CRE assurance.
  • Provide input on design, buildability and methodologies as required.
  • Undertake Risk Assessments as required throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Liaison with interdisciplinary project team personnel to ensure that each other's requirement are understood and complied with.

About you

You will be self-motivated with a pro-active approach and have experience of working under pressure and meeting tight deadlines.

Problem solving, communication and good interpersonal skills are a key requirement for this role.

Flexibility is also essential for this role as there is a requirement to work night and weekend shifts over a rotating roster pattern.

  • The candidate will also ideally have the following skills and experience:
  • Demonstrable experience working within Overhead Line Engineering.
  • A Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or related discipline with an HNC/HND as a minimum.
  • Confident communication skills, both in writing and in internal and external correspondence.
  • Awareness of health, safety, welfare and environmental aspects of all development projects.
  • Ability to apply technical knowledge in analysing problems and creating solutions.
  • Ability to work on your own initiative.
  • Competent user of Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point.
  • Experience using digital platforms such as evi File or similar for completing quality assurance tasks
  • Experience at team working/collaborating.
  • Experience of Projectwise
