Signalling & Telecoms (S&T) provide cost‑effective engineering solutions for railway signalling projects throughout the UK. The team manages the full project life cycle and completes all aspects of design, project engineering, installation, testing, commissioning and maintenance support across all signalling technologies, equipment and systems. We also supply, install and test services for operational and lineside telecommunication renewals, either as a single‑discipline provider or as part of multidisciplinary projects, to ensure end‑to‑end connectivity. These capabilities extend to station information and security systems. Current contracts include the S&T Framework for NW&C, SP&C Framework in Scotland, TransPennine Route upgrade (TRue) and Train Control System Framework (TCSF) for ETCS delivery.
VolkerRail is recruiting two apprentices to undertake a 4‑year Level 7 Electrical Engineering Modern Apprenticeship, leading to a final qualification. The programme includes:
- Training in Railway Signalling Competence and Knowledge.
- Work experience across all signalling engineering disciplines.
- Involvement in innovative technology projects.
- Collaboration with highly skilled engineers on high‑profile rail projects.
What is Signalling? Signalling is the system that safely regulates the movement of trains across the country, using mechanical, electrical and electronic systems to separate trains from one another and from road users. The technology ranges from mechanical lever frames to electronic PLC‑style control systems that enable signalling from inside a train cab.
What will you do during the apprenticeship? You will help turn design concepts for railway signalling systems into reality, delivering complex engineering solutions that meet customer expectations. Your work experience will cover:
- Design – Working with teams that design the safety‑critical signalling system.
- Installation – Working trackside with teams who construct new signalling systems.
- Testing and commissioning – Working with teams that independently test and commission the signalling system to confirm performance.
- Project Engineering – Working across design, installation and testing to ensure safe construction that meets customer requirements and standards.
- Project Management – Working with those responsible for safe, on‑time, on‑budget delivery of projects from design through to commissioning and handback.
Qualifications and Eligibility Applicants must:
- Have 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) grade A*‑C / grade 9‑5 including Maths, English and Science.
- Possess an engineering aptitude and enjoy problem solving.
- Be aged 18 or older by 1st October 2025 (no upper age limit).
- Hold a valid driving licence to travel to work sites across Great Britain.
- Be willing to work weekends, nights and bank holidays, and to stay in hotel accommodation when required.
Salary Year 1: £22,500 (or national minimum wage if higher) Year 2: £24,500 Year 3: £26,500
Career Progression Upon completion of the apprenticeship, all apprentices are offered Junior Engineer positions in Design, Installation or Testing departments. The majority progress to Level 4 qualifications and further career development opportunities, including project manager or senior engineering roles.
