About Cambridge Center for Adult Education (CCAE): Since 1870, CCAE has been dedicated to providing the widest range of high‑quality, low‑cost learning opportunities for the diverse adults of greater Boston. CCAE is a nonprofit organization with an annual operating budget of $2.5 million and a staff of 15 FTEs. The organization runs nearly 2,000 classes each year over four terms, taught by more than 200 professionals, and owns two historically preserved properties in Harvard Square.
Job Summary: The Cambridge Center for Adult Education, located in Harvard Square, is seeking a part‑time instructor to teach an 8‑week “Crash Course in Astronomy” class for adults during the Summer 2026 term. The course will run on eight Mondays from 7:45 pm to 9:15 pm, beginning July 13. The schedule may be adjusted to accommodate the instructor’s availability.
Course Description: From exoplanets to exploding stars, and dark energy to the Big Bang, this course offers a front‑row seat to the most fascinating phenomena of the universe. Students will learn how astronomers have decoded the secrets of the night sky and explore mysteries that remain unsolved. Topics include our solar system, the life cycle of stars, compact objects, galaxies, dark matter, cosmology, and how astronomical instruments work. The course blends observation with computation: two sessions will be live stargazing nights with a portable telescope and binoculars, while hands‑on computer simulations will let students model orbital mechanics, predict comet trajectories, and explore phenomena such as tidal forces and planetary perturbations.
Responsibilities:
- Deliver the eight‑week Crash Course in Astronomy to adult learners.
- Plan and conduct instructional sessions, including lectures, stargazing nights, and computer‑based simulations.
- Engage and support a diverse demographic of adult learners throughout the program.
Qualifications:
- Demonstrable experience and success in the science & nature sector.
- Experience as an educator or instructor.
- Ability to engage a diverse adult audience.
- A relevant degree, training, or experience in a science or nature‑related educational field is preferred.
Compensation: The hourly rate begins at $25 per hour, commensurate with experience. Instructors can also receive one free class per term, valued up to $300.
