The Diocese of Manchester has established the Places Project, which is working with 33 schools and 33 churches in Bolton to develop discipleship pathways for children and young people. The Shades Project focuses on racial justice and faith, supporting schools and churches to create a culture where all children and young people, regardless of racial background, can thrive. We are appointing a Shades Schools Worker to support opportunities for Christian discipleship and to embed the Shades ethos in primary and secondary schools and parishes in Bolton deanery.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver Shades Collective Worship and Shades Safe Space workshops in primary and secondary schools.
  • Lead Shades Ambassadors groups for children and young people interested in growing in racial justice, Christian faith, and courageous advocacy.
  • Work with Bolton parishes and mission communities to promote the Christian message of God’s love for all people and to help children, young people, and adults celebrate their God-given identities and grow spiritually.
  • Engage in training and development opportunities and contribute to developing initiatives for children and young people.
  • Work within a motivated and supportive team committed to prayer and welcoming children and young people into church life.

Qualifications and requirements

  • Experience volunteering with children or young people in a church and/or school context.
  • Good knowledge of anti-racism and racial justice and a strong passion for the combined focus on Christian faith and racial justice; experience of working with diverse communities.
  • Enthusiastic, relational, self-motivated; able to lead in a range of contexts; creative and able to lead and support activities in schools and parishes.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with sensitivity and the ability to communicate with people from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective working partnerships and a working understanding of safeguarding policies and procedures.
  • Be a practising Christian (Occupational Requirement) in accordance with Schedule 9 of the Equality Act 2010.
  • DBS check (enhanced) with barred list check (child workforce), satisfactory references, and proof of eligibility to work in the UK.
  • A desire to learn and grow; passion for racial justice, the Christian faith, and working with children and young people is essential.
