What you’ll do

The successful achievement of our sustainability goals requires a business-wide transformation, with sustainability integrated into decision-making, and every employee understanding how they can be part of the transition to a more sustainable future.

This role will be responsible for programmes that foster a culture of sustainability across Vodafone globally, and supporting the business to deliver Vodafone’s environmental and social sustainability ambitions and targets.

This role will own, develop and implement strategies for sustainability engagement, including capacity- and capability-building, Purpose activation and employee engagement. The successful candidate will be responsible for building and maintaining communities of sustainability practitioners across functions and markets.

This role is also responsible for advising on the technical accuracy of environmental claims (green claims) made in brand, marketing, corporate and internal communications, to manage any risk of our stakeholders being misled and to align sustainability-related communications with Vodafone’s Purpose narrative.

This role is in the Group Sustainable Business team, but will work in close collaboration with cross-functional stakeholders in Human Resources, Brand, Corporate Communications, Investor Relations, Internal Communications, Vodafone Business, and Public Affairs.

  • Capability and capacity building: Build sustainability capability, capacity and engagement across our workforce, at all levels from senior leadership to operations. Ideate, scope/design, implement and maintain initiatives, and developing resources to empower others to take action in driving sustainable business change.
  • Sustainability changemaker community: Build and maintain communities of sustainability practitioners across functions and markets, including management of learning and development content, organisation and facilitation of network calls and other interactions or events.
  • Sustainability performance incentives: Integrate sustainability programmes into performance management structures including objective setting, reward and incentive plans.
  • Purpose activation campaigns and projects: Collaborate cross-function to develop and implement campaigns or projects that activate Vodafone\’s Purpose for engaging internal and external audiences
  • Employee engagement projects: Maintain and run the Group Sustainable Business research programme, to enable employees from all parts of Vodafone to engage in short term sustainability-related research projects. Support the scoping, organisation and delivery of internal events related to Purpose (for awareness raising, alignment or engagement).
  • Green claims evaluation: Assess the technical accuracy of and advise upon environmental claims in brand, marketing, product & services and corporate communications. Collaborate with Group Legal teams to maintain guidance to and learning resources for communication writers.

Who you are

  • A bachelor’s degree or professional qualification in a sustainability-related field
  • Experience of working in a corporate sustainability team within in a matrixed organisation
  • Experience in change management in a multi-national and cultural environment.
  • Knowledge of environmental claims regulations and best practice guidelines (preferable)
  • Advanced project management skills to steer strategies across multi – functional workstreams.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of key sustainability topics (e.g. net zero, circularity, digital inclusion).
  • Excellent communication skills and can work with both sustainability subject matter experts and a broader employee base
  • Excellent workshop facilitation skills to help navigate diverse stakeholders towards a common outcome
  • Excellent verbal and written communicator with strong collaboration and interpersonal skills to engage, manage and influence a wide range of stakeholders.
  • A passion for driving businesses towards a more sustainable future, and bringing all employees along on the journey
