We are seeking a skilled and motivated Lawyer to join our Legal Services team. You will provide high-quality legal advice and representation across a broad caseload relevant to your level of experience. Working closely with internal departments and external stakeholders, you will support a wide range of legal matters to ensure effective governance, legal compliance, and service delivery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage a varied caseload, providing legal advice, drafting, and advocacy on matters within the team’s portfolio.
  • Act as a legal advisor on non-complex matters, ensuring the provision of sound legal guidance in line with relevant legislation, policy, and procedure.
  • Draft and review legal documents and assist with the preparation of reports, briefing notes, and training materials related to new or changing legislation.
  • Provide support in the preparation of committee reports, ensuring legal and constitutional compliance.
  • Attend statutory panels, boards, and meetings with senior officers or external bodies to offer legal support where required.

Operational and Team Support

  • Support day-to-day legal operations within the team, collaborating with colleagues to prioritise and manage workloads.
  • Assist with the organisation and maintenance of internal administrative and quality assurance systems.
  • Support the use of external legal providers when required and attend legal conferences or hearings as appropriate.
  • Ensure deadlines, court timetables, and internal targets are met through effective time management and diary planning.

  • Contribute positively to the organisation’s strategic objectives and cross-departmental initiatives.
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, partners, and clients.
  • Promote inclusive, non-discriminatory practice in line with equality, diversity and inclusion principles.

Performance and Professional Standards

  • Ensure professional standards are maintained at all times, with compliance to service level agreements and quality frameworks such as Lexcel (where applicable).
  • Meet time recording and performance targets, and participate in appraisals, training and development.
  • Assist with the implementation of the Legal Services Team Plan and contribute to the achievement of organisational goals.

Person Specification

  • Essential: Qualified solicitor, barrister, or legal executive eligible to practise in England and Wales.
  • Experience handling a legal caseload, preferably within the public or wider legal services sector.
  • Ability to provide accurate legal advice and undertake legal drafting across a range of subject areas.
  • Strong advocacy and negotiation skills with the ability to represent the organisation where appropriate.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a collaborative and flexible approach.
  • Strong organisational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritise and meet deadlines.
  • Desirable: Experience working within or supporting public sector or local government legal services.
  • Familiarity with governance structures, policy development or decision-making processes within a public body.
