Heritage Building Surveyor – Protecting the Past, Shaping the Future

Are you passionate about preserving the UK\’s historic architecture? We\’re looking for a skilled and experienced Heritage Building Surveyor to carry out quadrennial inspections and produce high-quality reports for Grade II listed buildings and dwellings. This is an exciting opportunity to play a vital role in the conservation and maintenance of our architectural heritage, ensuring it endures for future generations.

The Role

This home-based role offers flexibility, but you\’ll also need to travel regularly-sometimes with overnight stays-depending on the location of the buildings under your care. You\’ll be working across the South East and South West of England, visiting a variety of historic sites, assessing condition, and guiding conservation-led repair recommendations.

You\’ll conduct detailed inspections of Grade II listed buildings, assessing structural condition, traditional materials, and conservation priorities. Your findings will feed into clear, well-structured quadrennial reports that advise stakeholders on maintenance requirements and best conservation practices in line with Historic England guidance and local authority regulations.

As a trusted professional, you\’ll collaborate with a range of stakeholders including homeowners, conservation officers, architects, and heritage organisations. Your advice will balance historic integrity with practicality, recommending appropriate repairs with a focus on minimal intervention and long-term preservation.

What You\’ll Bring

To be successful in this role, you\’ll need a degree or postgraduate qualification in Building Conservation, Historic Building Surveying, Architecture, Heritage Management, or a similar field, along with professional membership (such as IHBC, RICS with Building Conservation Accreditation, CIOB, or RIBA).

You\’ll bring hands-on experience in surveying historic buildings, a strong understanding of traditional materials and construction techniques, and a deep knowledge of heritage legislation and planning processes.

We\’re looking for someone with excellent written communication skills, capable of producing high-standard reports that reflect deep conservation knowledge and prioritise the character and integrity of the buildings being assessed.

Experience working with Historic England, local planning authorities, or conservation charities and Grade II listed buildings is essential. Skills in CAD or heritage surveying software, and a good understanding of sustainability in historic conservation, will also strengthen your application.

This is a chance to contribute directly to the safeguarding of the UK\’s architectural legacy. If you\’re ready to make your mark as a heritage specialist, we\’d love to hear from you.

What We Offer:

  • 6% employee matched pension contribution
  • 25 days annual leave
  • Single private medical cover
  • Company Car/Car allowance
  • Life assurance 2 x annual salary
