About the role
Our client, a local authority, is looking for a Housing Register Officer to join their housing team on an interim basis for 9 months, with extension. The role involves managing the housing register, assessing applications and making sure people in housing need are placed in the right band under the council’s allocations policy.
You will deal with applications from first receipt through to assessment and decision, working with applicants, partner organisations and colleagues across the service. The position suits a housing professional who is comfortable working independently, prioritising a varied workload and explaining decisions clearly to applicants. The role requires one day a week on site.
The successful candidate will bring sound knowledge of allocations and housing legislation, good judgement and clear communication. This is a hands-on assignment where your experience will be put to work from the outset.
Main responsibilities
- Assess applications to the housing register in line with the council’s allocations policy and relevant legislation
- Verify applicant information, including identity, residency, income and housing circumstances
- Determine eligibility, housing need and banding, and issue clear, well-reasoned decision letters
- Review and update existing registrations, including changes of circumstance and annual reviews
- Respond to reviews and enquiries from applicants, councillors and partner agencies within agreed timescales
- Advise applicants on their housing options and the choice-based lettings process
- Liaise with housing associations, support services, health professionals and other agencies
- Support the allocation and nomination of properties where required
- Maintain accurate case records and meet service performance targets
Requirements
- Relevant experience in a housing register, allocations or housing options role, ideally within a local authority
- Sound knowledge of allocations legislation, including Part 6 of the Housing Act 1996
- Experience assessing applications and making decisions on eligibility and priority
- Experience managing a caseload and working to deadlines
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to handle sensitive and challenging conversations
- Good organisation and attention to detail
- Competence with housing case management systems and Microsoft Office
- The ability to attend the council’s offices in Stratford-on-Avon one day a week
The offer
- An interim role for 9 months with extension
- A rate of £33 per hour
