Flood Risk Engineer

Job Title: Flood Risk Engineer
Hours: 37 hours per week
Rate: £40–£45 per hour (Umbrella)
Location: Epping, Essex
Start Date: January 2026
Contract: 3 Months (with potential to extend)

I am delighted to be supporting Epping Forest District Council in recruiting a Flood Risk Engineer on an initial 3-month contract, with a view to extend.

Role Purpose:

This role is ideal for a technical specialist with expertise in flood risk management and drainage systems. You will:

• Review flood risk assessments and SuDS designs.
• Respond to planning applications and advise on drainage compliance.
• Contribute to the management of the council’s flood storage assets.
• Challenge consultants and developers to ensure effective drainage systems that comply with policy and legislation.
• Monitor and assess new and existing drainage systems across developments, including large residential sites.

Key Responsibilities:

• Deliver technical services across flood risk management, land drainage, and SuDS review.
• Undertake practical tasks such as inspecting drainage systems and flood risk assets.
• Make routine decisions regarding site visits, inspections, and public enquiries.
• Work collaboratively within the Environmental Protection and Drainage Team.

Skills, Knowledge & Experience:

• Relevant professional qualification or equivalent experience in flood risk engineering, drainage, or environmental protection.
• Strong understanding of SuDS systems and flood risk legislation.
• Previous experience in reviewing drainage systems and planning applications.
• Proficiency in MS Office and GIS mapping systems; knowledge of MicroDrainage/InfoDrainage is advantageous.
• Excellent attention to detail and record-keeping skills.
