Company Overview: Our client is a local authority based in Hertfordshire, dedicated to protecting public health, the environment, and local communities. The council delivers a wide range of regulatory services and is seeking an experienced Environmental Protection professional to lead its Environmental Protection function during a period of increased demand.

Role Overview: We are recruiting an Environmental Protection Team Leader for an initial 3-month contract, starting ASAP. This is a key leadership role responsible for managing a team delivering statutory Environmental Protection services, ensuring legal compliance, high professional standards, and effective enforcement outcomes. The role is full-time (37 hours per week) and will suit a candidate with strong technical expertise and proven leadership experience within a local authority setting.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead, manage, and support a team of Environmental Protection Officers, ensuring effective service delivery and performance management.
  • Oversee statutory Environmental Protection functions, including noise nuisance, pollution control, air quality, and contaminated land.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant environmental protection legislation, policies, and enforcement procedures.
  • Provide expert technical advice on complex Environmental Protection cases, including interpretation of monitoring data and legal processes.
  • Manage workloads, ensuring statutory deadlines are met and priorities are adjusted in response to urgent or high-risk cases.
  • Review, interpret, and approve technical reports, including noise monitoring data, air quality assessments, and related documentation.
  • Prepare reports for senior management and contribute to service development and continuous improvement.
  • Liaise effectively with internal departments, external agencies, businesses, and members of the public.

Requirements (Qualifications, Skills & Experience):

Essential:

  • Proven track record in Environmental Protection within a local authority setting.
  • Degree-level qualification in Environmental Health or a relevant related discipline.
  • Significant depth of experience across Environmental Protection functions, including extensive use of noise monitoring equipment, interpretation of results, and report writing.
  • Experience with air quality assessments and/or contaminated land work.
  • Strong working knowledge of Environmental Protection legislation and enforcement processes.
  • Ability to manage a complex workload, meet statutory deadlines, and rapidly re-prioritise work as required.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively (verbally and in writing) with the public, businesses, peers, and senior stakeholders.
  • Proven experience managing or supervising staff.

Desirable:

  • Membership of a relevant professional body (e.g. CIEH).
  • Experience dealing with complex, sensitive, or high-profile Environmental Protection cases.
