Associate Partner / Associate Planner

Chelmsford / Saffron Walden | £50,000–£70,000 + Car Allowance + Bonus

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Associate Planner / Associate Partner to join a growing planning consultancy with an established presence across Essex and the wider South East.

\n

\n

We are looking for an ambitious planning professional with 5–10+ years' experience who is ready to take the next step in their career, or an established Associate looking for greater responsibility, client exposure and a clear route towards partnership.

\n

\n

The role will involve working on a broad range of major planning applications and appeals, with exposure to significant residential and commercial development projects.

\n

\n

The Role

\n

You will take a leading role in managing projects from inception through to determination and, where required, appeal. Your responsibilities will include:

\n

\n

    \n
  • Managing and leading major planning applications across residential and commercial sectors.
  • \n

  • Preparing and coordinating planning strategies, submissions and supporting documentation.
  • \n

  • Managing planning appeals, including written representations, hearings and inquiries.
  • \n

  • Providing commercially focused planning advice to landowners, developers and other clients.
  • \n

  • Building and maintaining strong client relationships.
  • \n

  • Liaising with local planning authorities, consultants, agents and other stakeholders.
  • \n

  • Identifying opportunities and contributing to business development and the growth of the consultancy.
  • \n

  • Taking responsibility for project budgets, programmes and delivery.
  • \n

  • Mentoring and supporting junior planners, helping to develop the wider team.
  • \n

  • Potentially taking on increasing management and leadership responsibilities as the role develops.
  • \n

About You

\n

We are looking for someone who combines strong technical planning knowledge with excellent communication and commercial awareness.

\n

\n

You will ideally have:

\n

    \n
  • 5–10+ years' relevant planning experience.
  • \n

  • A strong track record in major planning applications and/or appeals.
  • \n

  • Experience across residential and/or commercial development.
  • \n

  • Strong knowledge of the English planning system and relevant planning legislation and policy.
  • \n

  • Excellent report-writing, negotiation and communication skills.
  • \n

  • The ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines effectively.
  • \n

  • Experience dealing directly with clients and planning authorities.
  • \n

  • A proactive, commercially minded approach.
  • \n

  • Ideally, MRTPI or working towards chartership.
  • \n

  • Previous experience mentoring or managing junior colleagues would be advantageous.
  • \n
