We are currently seeking an experienced Food Safety Officer to support the Environmental Health team on a full-time basis. This role will focus on delivering statutory food safety functions, inspections, and enforcement activities across a varied commercial portfolio. The position requires an on-site presence three days per week, with flexibility for remote working on remaining days.
Key Responsibilities- Carry out food hygiene inspections across a range of food premises in line with the Food Law Code of Practice
- Investigate food complaints, infectious disease notifications, and food-related incidents
- Provide advice and guidance to food business operators to ensure compliance
- Undertake enforcement actions where necessary, including improvement notices and formal action
- Maintain accurate records and reports using internal systems
- Support wider Environmental Health and Trading Standards initiatives as required
- Proven experience working as a Food Safety Officer within a local authority
- Strong knowledge of food safety legislation and enforcement procedures
- Ability to work independently and manage a varied caseload
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills
- Environmental Health qualification or equivalent
- EHRB registration (or working towards)
- Competency to undertake food hygiene inspections (including Category A–C where applicable)
- Experience working in a metropolitan or high-volume authority
- REHIS / CIEH membership
- Experience with infectious disease investigations
- Rate: £35–£40 per hour (depending on experience)
- Hours: Full-time
- Working Pattern: 3 days per week office-based in Birmingham
- Contract Length: Ongoing / initial 3–6 months with potential extension
