The successful candidate will assess housing need, provide clear advice and work with households to prevent homelessness wherever possible. Where prevention is not possible, the role involves carrying out statutory assessments, making decisions under the relevant legislation and arranging suitable accommodation. Casework will cover a wide range of circumstances, including residents with complex or vulnerable situations. This is a position for a housing professional who combines sound legal knowledge with a fair, practical and empathetic approach. The role involves regular contact with residents, landlords, support agencies and colleagues across the council, and offers the chance to make a real difference to people's housing outcomes. Main responsibilitiesCarry out housing needs assessments and provide advice and assistance to households facing homelessnessDeliver homelessness prevention and relief duties in line with the Housing Act 1996 and the Homelessness Reduction Act 2017Complete statutory homelessness assessments and make well-reasoned, legally sound decisionsDevelop and review personalised housing plans with applicantsArrange and manage temporary accommodation where requiredWork with private landlords and housing providers to secure suitable accommodation, including options in the private rented sectorLiaise with support services, health, social care and voluntary sector partners to support vulnerable residentsRespond to reviews and appeals and support the council's legal position where challengedMaintain accurate case records and ensure compliance with data protection and safeguarding requirementsContribute to service development and team performance targetsRequirementsEssentialExperience working in housing options, homelessness prevention or a similar frontline housing roleWorking knowledge of homelessness legislation, including the Housing Act 1996 and the Homelessness Reduction Act 2017Experience managing a caseload and making decisions under statutory dutiesStrong interviewing, assessment and negotiation skillsGood written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to handle sensitive conversationsCompetence with housing case management systems and Microsoft OfficeDesirablePrevious experience within a local authority housing teamA relevant housing qualification, such as CIH, or progress towards oneExperience working with households with complex needs or safeguarding concernsExperience working with private sector landlordsKnowledge of the allocations process and temporary accommodation managementThe offerThis is a permanent role based in Berkshire.
