Our client is a well-regarded local authority based in the South East of England, committed to protecting public health and maintaining high food hygiene standards across the district. Due to increased service demand, they are seeking an experienced Food Safety Officer to provide interim support to the Environmental Health team.

We are recruiting a Part‑Time Food Safety Officer for an initial 6‑month contract, starting ASAP. The successful candidate will deliver statutory food safety functions, ensuring compliance with food hygiene legislation and supporting local businesses in meeting regulatory standards. This role offers 18–20 hours per week at a competitive rate of £40 per hour. Flexible and hybrid working arrangements may be available subject to service requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct programmed and reactive food hygiene inspections in accordance with the Food Safety Act 1990
  • Undertake interventions in line with the Food Standards Agency Food Law Code of Practice
  • Investigate food complaints, food poisoning notifications, and infectious disease cases
  • Take enforcement action where necessary, including service of Hygiene Improvement Notices and preparation of prosecution files
  • Provide advice and guidance to food business operators to ensure compliance with food hygiene regulations
  • Complete inspection reports and maintain accurate records within agreed timescales
  • Support new business registrations and approval processes where required

Requirements (Qualifications / Skills & Experience)

Essential

  • Significant experience working as a Food Safety Officer within a local authority setting
  • Authorised Officer status under the Food Safety Act 1990
  • Strong knowledge of food hygiene legislation and enforcement procedures
  • Experience carrying out a range of food hygiene inspections across risk categories
  • Ability to manage workload effectively within limited weekly hours
  • Excellent communication and report‑writing skills

Desirable

  • Degree or professional qualification in Environmental Health or a related discipline
  • Membership of the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH)
  • Experience dealing with complex food complaints or formal enforcement action
  • Experience mentoring or supporting junior officers
