This includes analysing information, developing recommendations, preparing clear reports and papers, and supporting the implementation of agreed actions.

The role suits a consultant who can step into a public sector setting quickly and work independently. Sound judgement, strong communication skills and the ability to build credibility with a wide range of stakeholders will be important, as will a practical approach to getting things done within a structured governance environment.

  • Prepare clear, well-structured reports, briefings and papers for officers, senior leaders and committees
  • Support the planning, delivery and monitoring of projects and programmes, including risks, issues and dependencies
  • Engage with internal teams, partner organisations and external stakeholders, and manage working relationships
  • Provide expert input and guidance to colleagues on matters within your area of experience
  • Support governance, assurance and reporting requirements
  • Share knowledge and good practice with the team during the assignment
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation, and meet agreed deadlines

  • Proven experience working as a Consultant or in a comparable advisory role
  • Experience delivering work to agreed timescales and budgets
  • Strong analytical, report writing and presentation skills
  • Confident working with stakeholders at different levels of seniority
  • Ability to work independently and manage your own workload
  • Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office

Desirable

  • Previous experience in a combined authority, local authority or wider public sector setting
  • Experience of regional economic, regeneration, transport or skills programmes
  • Experience supporting funded programmes and associated reporting
  • A relevant professional qualification

The offer

  • Interim position based in Darlington
  • Rate, start date, duration and working pattern to be confirmed with candidates
