We are looking for an experienced and customer-focused Council Tax Officer to join our Revenues & Benefits team. You will play a key role in the accurate administration and collection of Council Tax, helping to deliver an efficient, fair, and responsive service to our residents.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone with local authority Council Tax experience who is confident using Academy Systems and understands the importance of balancing income collection with high-quality customer care.
Key Responsibilities- Administer Council Tax accounts, including liability, discounts, exemptions, premiums, and reliefs
- Process changes of circumstance and maintain accurate Council Tax records
- Issue bills, adjustments, reminders, final notices, and statutory correspondence
- Provide clear and professional advice to customers via telephone, email, correspondence, and face-to-face where required
- Support the recovery of unpaid Council Tax, including setting up payment arrangements and preparing cases for enforcement action
- Use Academy Revenues systems to update accounts, record actions, and maintain audit trails
- Ensure compliance with Council Tax legislation, data protection requirements, and council policies
- Work collaboratively with colleagues across Revenues, Benefits, Customer Services, and Finance
- Experience working in a Council Tax or Revenues role within a UK local authority
- Good working knowledge of Council Tax legislation and administration
- Experience using Academy Systems (or strong transferable revenues system experience)
- Strong customer service and communication skills
- Ability to manage a varied workload and meet deadlines
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail
- Experience of Council Tax Reduction schemes
- Knowledge of recovery and enforcement processes
- Experience dealing with vulnerable customers
- Familiarity with Kent local authority working environments
