We are recruiting for an experienced Local Authority Senior Planning Officer in Central London.
Westminster City Council is seeking an experienced Senior Planning Officer / Planning Officer to play a key role within the Development Planning service. This position is central to supporting high-profile, complex and sensitive planning work across one of the most dynamic and high-value urban environments in the UK.
Working within the Place Shaping and Town Planning Directorate, the postholder will assess a wide range of planning applications, provide authoritative professional advice, and help shape the future of the city. This role requires a strong understanding of planning legislation, excellent communication skills, and the ability to manage complex stakeholder relationships.
Key responsibilities include:
- Assess a broad range of planning applications under the Planning Acts, with a particular focus on complex or strategically significant cases.
- Prepare high-quality professional reports and recommendations to Planning Committee, or for delegated decision by senior officers.
- Apply relevant legislation, regulations, national guidance, and Westminster’s City Plan and planning policies.
- Attend and lead on sensitive meetings with Councillors, Chief Officers, major landowners, developers, resident groups, amenity societies, BIDs and other stakeholders.
- Represent the service at internal and external meetings, maintaining a high professional profile.
- Deputise for the Area Planning Officer as required, supporting the management of team workloads and overall service delivery.
Candidate Requirements:
- Strong, up-to-date knowledge of UK planning law and the planning system.
- Understanding of urban design and conservation issues.
- Ability to collaborate effectively as part of wider project teams, making high-quality technical contributions.
- Ability to build positive working relationships and contribute to a supportive and high-performing team environment.
Qualifications:
- Degree or Diploma in Town Planning or a related discipline (essential).
- Eligibility for Chartered Membership of the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) (desirable).
This is a contract role and you will need to have experience in a similar role.
