Would you like to be part of Vital Energi’s Strategy of Growth? The Opportunity: We’re looking for an experienced and driven SHEQ Manager to join our team. You will be responsible for driving cultural change and promoting Safety, Health, Quality and Environmental aspects at our Energy From Waste (EFW) facility. You will lead professional safety and quality aspects, additionally providing lead support on environmental direction at the EFW site, where a culture of safety and regulatory compliance comes before operational efficiency, thus ensuring that safety & environmental risks are effectively identified, managed and monitored. You will add value to the new EFW facility by coaching managers and employees to fully engage in, and actively promote, sound SHEQ working practices, as well as identifying areas of improvement on the site.

The Role: The following is a summary of the main tasks and responsibilities of the post:

  • Positively influences thinking and behaviours so that the site personnel engage, promote and understand the benefits of good SHEQ practice.
  • Responsible for frontline SHEQ advice at site.
  • Motivate, coach, and encourage all site personnel in SHEQ matters.
  • Influence and support improvements of SHEQ performance and engagement throughout both the site’s internal and external customer base.
  • Drives and supports business ownership of SHEQ reporting, investigations and effective monitoring.
  • Assists site Management team in managing a Safe System of Work (SSOW) and Permit To Work (PTW) system for general site safety and safety from the system across the facility.
  • Conducts risk reviews, gap assessments, site inspections accompanied with the Regional SHEQ Advisor to identify non-conformance and enable site to address areas of concern.
  • Encourages innovative ways of working and challenging existing operational practices to continually enhance and drive SHEQ excellence.
  • Assists in ensuring that the site operates within its legal safety obligations, its environmental permit conditions and other permissions relevant to site, where any unsafe acts or environmental breaches are brought to the Company’s attention.
  • Organises and participates in occupational health training and monitoring, including RPE face fit testing.
  • Analyses site SHEQ data (including Corrective Action Reports and incident reports) to monitor KPI’s, overall performance and plan improvements.
  • Ensures that serious incidents are thoroughly investigated internally and/or externally to determine root cause, prevent recurrence and identify areas of improvement.
  • Manages and handles internal, third party (sub-contractor) and external audits; manages and responds to external stakeholders (HSE, EA, BSI, local authorities) as required.
  • Supports the delivery of strategic SHEQ activities driven by Company initiatives, or Plant Manager.
  • Leads outage support on all safety and compliance matters, including CDM requirements.
  • Prepares site monthly, quarterly, and annual SHEQ reporting for the Plant Manager as per company standards, to include all SHEQ parameters detailed in the central legal and regulatory compliance master register.
  • Assists Plant Management and leads in the development of the site management plans in accordance with the site permit requirements including; waste contingency plans, litter, traffic management, odour, fly, water, soil, noise and vibration.
  • Delivers with the Plant Management team specific notifications as per the site permit are completed and forwarded to the Regulator, including permit requirements, including duty of care and waste return requirements.
  • Assists the operations team and oversees sampling and testing requirements of all residues and discharge requirements to ensure quality of product is in line with regulatory stipulations.
  • Manages the document control process at site in accordance with site ISO accredited BMS and Company systems and standards.
  • Reviews, monitors, analyses and reports SHEQ metrics, objectives and targets for overall business improvement and in line with the Plant and Group Corporate Responsibility objectives.

The Person: Successful background in Energy from Waste, waste management, or a similar regulated industry. Strong practical understanding of relevant UK Health, Safety & Environmental legislation. Familiarity in implementing, managing and developing fit-for-purpose and compliant QMS ISO 9001 / EMS ISO 14001 / HSMS 45001. Familiar with BSEN: 14181 air emissions monitoring & CEMS operation. Experience of construction projects under CDM as a Client or Principal Contractor - Principal Designer experience may be beneficial. NEBOSH general certificate and working towards NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent level qualification in Occupational Safety and Health. WAMITAB COTC L4 with EFW accreditation units. Membership of IOSH / IIRSM / APS (or similar health & safety-related institution). Member of ISEP (formerly IEMA) / CIWM. Understanding of DSEAR/ COMAH/ ATEX/ LOLER/ PUWER/ HAVS/ PSSR/PED/ PPE/RPE.
