The Opportunity
We’re excited to announce that we’re looking for an Electrical Technician at our new energy from waste infrastructure, Port Clarence biomass facility in Teesside. As an Electrical Technician, you will support the Engineer in the delivery of all site maintenance functions. Responsibilities include condition-based monitoring, planned and reliability-centred maintenance, breakdown response and rectification activities, lifecycle maintenance, and outage planning and execution. The role encompasses maintenance of waste-fired high-pressure boilers, flue gas treatment systems, steam turbines and generators, ash handling equipment, auxiliary balance-of-plant equipment, high-voltage apparatus, and the distributed control (DCS) system. Additionally, the role requires close liaison with the Plant operations team, and other teams across the organisation ensuring high levels of plant availability and performance within approved budgets, while maintaining safety as the foremost priority. Responsible for assisting the Management Team in the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of the Waste to Energy facility.
This position supports the Maintenance Manager and Maintenance Engineer in delivering all site maintenance functions, including condition-based monitoring, planned and reliability-centred maintenance, breakdown response and rectification, lifecycle maintenance, and outage planning and execution, while ensuring the effective upkeep of waste-fired high-pressure boilers, flue gas treatment systems, steam turbines and generators, ash handling equipment, auxiliary balance-of-plant equipment.
Vital Energi- Port Clarence- Strategic asset ownership journey Port Clarence represents the next phase of Vital Energi's evolution from energy solutions provider to significant asset owner, processing 320,000 tonnes of Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) and produce over 30Mwe, this marks a substantial step-change in scale and ambition. Vital Energi will further invest in the optimisation of the Drakelow EfW plant to improve its productivity and returns, ensuring it continues to deliver robust operational and financial performance as part of the company’s growing portfolio. The energy generated by both facilities will be exported back to the national grid.
The Role
- Delivers and maintains high standards relating to health and safety performance and culture, environmental compliance and site housekeeping.
- Comply with and actively participate in Company rules, procedures, initiatives, in particular those relating to Health, Safety, environmental management, quality systems and continuous improvement.
- Promotes an environment whereby safety is a priority, ensuring that personnel operate safely at all times and immediately reporting any unsafe acts or conditions as per the incident reporting systems.
- In conjunction with management team, thoroughly and promptly assist with investigating any accidents or near misses to ensure that any unsafe practices or conditions are addressed and eliminated immediately.
- Knowledge of the site emergency plan, key role within it and supports the site emergency response team.
- Complies fully with corporate safety rules, site safety rules and associated safe systems of work, PTW, RAMS and authorisation procedures to ensure that the plant is always maintained within prescribed Health, Safety and Environmental constraints and guidelines.
- Assists with the development, maintenance and implementation of operating and emergency instructions and procedures following OEM operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
- Ensures plant systems are safely isolated, depressurised, drained and cooled as necessary for maintenance personnel to carry out rectification works or maintenance tasks safely.
- Ensures that the correct PPE/RPE is worn at all times as identified in the Risk Assessment/Method Statement applicable to the activity being performed.
- Assists the Maintenance Manager in the development of a comprehensive set of plant maintenance procedures.
- Ensures that a work order, risk assessment and method statements are produced for each activity and that all documents are completed in accordance with the Company CMMS procedures.
- Using the Company CMMS, plans, supports, and documents both preventative and reactive maintenance tasks.
- Assists with investigations into plant and process issues including root cause analysis, providing technical expertise, evaluating process variables, maintaining records, writing reports and taking appropriate action to ensure plant operations remain within design and regulatory requirements.
- Ensures that the plant is maintained in accordance with the prescribed O&M guidelines or approved instructions following analysis of operational history and plant information.
- Effectively uses Condition Based monitoring (CBM), Reliability Centred Maintenance (RCM), Thermographic Surveys and Oil Analysis methods to ensure the plant is maintained to the highest standards, resulting in high efficiency and reliability, whilst reducing labour task times and minimising spend.
- Assist the Electrical Engineer to ensure that plant statutory and regulatory insurance inspections and obligations are undertaken with an appointed Inspector in accordance with company policies and procedures.
- Ensures that the Electrical Engineer and Shift Team Leader(s) are informed of maintenance activities that impact upon availability and reliability.
The Person
Education/experience Have a background in engineering or process operations and hold the following qualifications: In-depth knowledge of steam raising plant and power generation equipment, welding procedures, maintenance & repair issues and knowledge of electrical design and instrumentation & control systems. Familiar with PTW, SSOW, RAMS & AP training. Experience with computerised monitoring and reporting systems (CMMS). Knowledge and experience of fault finding and repairs controls and instrumentation on plant equipment. Understanding of CBM, RCM, Thermographic Surveys, VA and Oil Analysis techniques Mobile plant / IPAF MEWP / FLT licenses & PASMA trained. Knowledge, experience and familiarity of working under CDM regulations is desirable. IT literate and competent to manage excel-based spreadsheets and produce written reports in word format.
